Searching for the white tailed ninja...

Even better than Christmas, The first day of Bow season started on the first. A friend is allowing to hunt his 83 acres. Other than him and his son its just one other hunter and myself. and its only the other hunter and myself that bow hunt, not to brag but I basically have the land to myself until gun season.

Other than a good paying local job I'm taking some down time and getting in some hunting for the next week, or so, unless I use up all my deer tags, witch ever comes first. Woods will be quiet until Nov. 14 Nov. 15 - Dec. 7 is gun Late bow Dec. 8- 16. so, I have time.
I spent the 1st out and nothing. I was able to go out yesterday afternoon and today late day until sundown. Its been very windy the past two days, and yes I know I'm out late the past two days but when I did my recon a couple three weeks ago I noticed they were pretty active in the P.M. and they seem to be moving around when I look out at the fields after packing up.

I can hear them and see all kinds of bedding areas, tracks, scat, and a few promising rubs. The only ones I have seen were a young buck that popped out of the brush line and I couldn't nock up my bow before he saw me and a nice doe that stuck her front quarters and looked around a few times and disappeared. Had she come out or quartered just a little more I would have my first one.
Anyway I figured I would get out there before daylight and set up there is a nice patch of woods near one of the bedding areas.
I'm sure the return for my patience and perseverance means the venison will taste better.

Do whitetails typically sleep in the same general areas?
I don't mind moving around so when is the best time to try the woods vs. fields?
The fields still have what look like soybeans and winter wheat.
Any suggestions???

Bob Wolf.

Newbie? Sounds like you have a good handle on it..Knowing where the trails and bedding spots are a great start. I have killed a lot of deer over the years and in no way do I consider myself any kind of buck master. :) I can go days or even a year without seeing deer. Just because a whitetail was there on Sunday can mean nothing the rest of the week.
Be ready to be mobile on your hunting spot. And then figure out what stand to use when the wind blows and from what direction. Knowing the trail they use from the fields to the bedding area are preety important.
This time of year Bucks are looking for females and will/can be moving at any given time. If your over looking a crop feild try to pick one that has something blocking the view to the next field. This will cause bucks to move more in search of Doe's. Exp: If the buck can over look two fields at once he has no need to move around to both fields.
I use fields as a last resort. And only because they can extend the daylight by a few minutes. Or use them when pushing deer. 9 times out of ten I set up in wood lots that are between the bedding area and open feilds or woodlots that skirt the bottom land/heavy cover.
You can be productive almost anywhere you see signs..Key is to spend as much time possible doing it. Ya can't get one if you don't go out.
Remeber its not about killing that once in a lifetime Buck. That's nothing but a bonus and maybe something that keeps drawing you back.
Every time you had one walk in on you and even if he walks away,, You won the day. :)
As you hang in that tree look around and think what can you do to improve your spot. With landowners permission of course. Planting 2 little apple trees could possible make all the difference for years to come.
Have fun and be safe climbing those trees.

Thanks for the like. Im not looking just for the freezer stuffing trophy buck, a couple three doe's large enough to justify using my deer tags will be fine.

Shouldn't you be cutting grass or something..lol

Cutting grass? ME?

Nope. been painting decoys, taking stuff out of the truck, looking for bullets. I have to try to rig a rifle rack on my tree stand. Still have to find a place to hunt opening day. It's a tough life.

Thanks, but I was talking about the 11th, duck opener. Won't be any divers down yet so the Lake will be dead. I can't hunt the marsh, my knees can't that the sticky muck out there.

I MAY paddle the canoe out to Rat Island, just don't know. Would have a crack at local popcorn ducks out there. Maybe a few teal left around, or a woodie.

I have not hunted out there, for several decades. I really have NO idea how sticky it is now.

I thought we where still talking about deer..
My opener is still up in the air also..Waiting on a call from my cousin. depending when I shoot home and how fast I can get my boat around. Thinking Saginaw bay area or the Maple River flooding. Maple river can produce some birds if its not to packed with hunters..the place is kinda small but easy to hunt, no motor boat needed just canoe and waders.
Worst comes to worst Ill just sit on the bank of the river behind the house and try to knock down some woodies and Mallards. Without a dog this year, so I am trying to shy away from the river unless its needed as a last resort. I hate walking across it to retreive.

I don't know if I can hunt Rat. I have not been there since 1975. NO idea in the world what the bottom is like now. Parts USED to be hard
