Search sleeper

Got pulled into scales in MI. Level 2 inspection. Officer was asking me a bunch of questions, drugs, alcohol, firearms. I carry a pistol in my sleeper, so I answered honestly.
He took this as an opportunity to search my sleeper.
My sleeper curtain was pulled, he had me out of my truck, and I told him he did not have permission to search my sleeper.
He ended up co fiscating my pistol.
The inspection form he gave me had zero information about firearms and had no violations.

He admitted that he did not know if it was accurate or not that he wasn't allowed to search a sleeper if the curtain was pulled.

Any input on routes to handle this?
I plan on getting a lawyer.

Do you have a valid concealed weapon license recognized I'm Michigan? If not, was the weapon legally being transported per federal interstate transport laws(unloaded, locked up, ammo separated)?

As far as I have allways been told, because you drive a commercial vehicle, they do not have to ask for permission to search your vehicle, even the sleeper.

If they confiscated the weapon I will bet it was not registered.

You are lucky, if that would have happened in New Jersey, you would be behind bars right now.

I understand the desire to carry a gun for protection, but it just really is not worth it when driving a commercial vehicle.

Well you are certainly entitled to your opinion, however I don't believe anyone's life is worth a job. I concealed carry whenever I was on the road for numerous years without issue. You just be careful where you go into and know the applicable firearm laws of every state. It's not that hard.

The only reason they would have given him a hard time about an unregistered firearm is if he was a Michigan resident. There is no universal firearm registry.

I'm kind of interested to hear the entire story. I do know there are some truck drivers who have a big misconception that their sleeper birth is an extension of their home and thus allows them to keep Firearms loaded in it..... I wonder if this is one of those cases.

Evidently, he had the right to search your sleeper without a warrant, or at least he thought so. Sounds like you could be in a heap of trouble if that pistol's serial number was missing or reported stolen. I'd guess that's why it was confiscated. If I were you I'd pony up for an attorney, this may get ugly.

It's always
