SCR fueling ,and why you need to call now.

this can be a problem ,whether you are planing of buying a new truck or not.

looks like more and more travel centers are now placing new fuel pumps for the DEF .
unfortunately , they do it wrong .
i see it mainly at Pilots , and more in the SW .
they placing the DEF pump upfront of one ,or few of the fueling island .
obviously , in a few years , those pumps will be placed upfront more diesels pumps . till then , the ones that will be driving those new trucks will have a way longer fueling stops.

so if they are planing of exclusive use for new trucks for those lines - it will leave less fueling stations for the rest of us .
this will probably won't be the case .

if you are planing of buying new truck soon , you need to call now.
as you will be faced with a long waiting line , just to get to 'your' pump .
& when you do , you will find out ,that you now have the same problem as reefers truckers had for years , as you cannot pump the DEF at the same time you are pumping your fuel .
you will have to hang the nozzle , pull forward - a lot forward , if you have the needed room , and if the truck ahead of you already pulled away . then you might get to your DEF tank .
you will also find that the DEF hose is shorter .and looks like you will have to enter your card and all the info again (?).
more so , you will find out , that the DEF pump , is not protected from weather .
so , if it is raining , you will have to clean your truck interior , and if it is snowing , or freezing , you will have a very , VERY , slippery surface to work on , as the DEF act worst then water .
(below is a Picture of what a DEF leaves on the floor once it leak , very slippery !)

they need to hear from you now , and place those pumps inside the fuel islands , not upfront .
and protect it from winter weather and rain .
they need to be aware of the hazard involved .
they need to add fueling lines to accommodate new trucks .
happy holiday's .

It is the fluid that the new trucks need to cut down the emissions - Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

As there become more 2010 trucks out here I hope to see this problem start taking care of itself. You will not need to get DEF every time you fuel. We have also seen the pumps within a TA shop and that will be a real pain in the behind. It is going to take time to straighten this mess out. Good thread Moose.

What about auto diesel? Is this going to be the case for all 2010 diesel vehicles, even vans that fuel in front instead of at the truck pumps? What will be the case with diesel passenger vehicles? Is this DEF going to be made available at the auto pumps as well, or is it only needed with larger trucks?

Sprinter Bluetec tank will last 10,000 miles (length of an oil change). Most automotive set ups will do the same as this is a potential revenue stream for the dealers. DEF is available now in 1 and 2 1/2 gallon containers at most J's and Pilots. It is a lot cheaper at the J (10.99 for 2 1/2 gal vs 15.99). For the van guys this would likely be a much simpler alternative. And...fuel mileage will go up compared to 2007 emission rule engines (the Sprinter also gets a nice HP and Torque boost!)

The key thing to remember is you don't need to buy DEF every time you get fuel, even in the big stuff, most Freightliners for example will have a tank (23 gals) that will allow you to go 6000 miles plus. So while the fill pumps will be a pain (hopefully they get it right) the actual amount of time you will have to use them will be small.
