Yeah I wouldn't work for them. They want get you home. The miles won't be that great and the pay won't either. A friend of mine was working there and he was home 3 days a month. That wouldn't be so bad if they hadn't promised him every other weekend home. If a big company like that doesn't get you home it's because they don't want to. Plus if someone will lie about one thing they will lie about another. If you're looking for a good place to start tractor trailer roehl is a good company to work for. So is Prime. I started with Prime as a company driver after I got out the service. I just wouldn't suggest going in on their lease purchase.

my brother ran for them and I went along for a few days
it seemed like every run was under 300 miles and the pay sucked I dont know how often they get you home he didnt stay long enough to find out.half the trailers was junk that i seen but they went to rail yards so maybe thats why.if your going to go trator trailer I would check out con-way now they have new 06 tractors they lease out if your wanting to buy.

The www.pumpkindriver.com link is a good way to hear from that company's drivers. When Diane and I were researching the trucking industry, and before we discovered expediting, Schneider would have been our company of choice. We've talked to a few pumpkin drivers on the road. All of them expressed satisfaction with the company. Of course, every company will have it's share of unhappy drivers and former drivers.

If you're looking to get into OTR, then the roundtable at www.truck.net would be a good place to seek answers. Most companies that take newbies treat them like crap. But there are some that are really good to work for.

If you're looking at expediting, everyone has their choice of companies to start out with. I chose Express-1 when I got back into expediting, and I was pleased running solo for them.

If I were you i would check out roehl.com or maverickusa.com. I started out with Prime,Inc. they are pretty good but again I would stay away from their lease purchase program.

When I was considering OTR tractor trailer driving...I also considered Roehl. U.S. Express is another good company, from what I had heard.

Let me tell a lil story here about Prime and their lease purchase program. My cousin was lease opreating with them when I got out of the service, and he recruited me to come on with Prime. I went on as a c0mpany driver. He got about nine months out on completeing his lease and they started cutting his miles they cut him down from 2800-3000 miles a week down to 1000-1200 miles a week. 6 months from completion after his fuel and insurance and the other lil things prime holds out thee was no money for him or his truck payment. He gets home one friday night and i happened to be home he says meet me at the truck to help me work on it. I said cool . I show up and the truck is gone. But my cuz's pick up isn't there. He shows up calls the cops and reports it stolen. then calls prime and reports it stolen. Prime says its not stolen just repoed and forclosed on. Then they charged him for a driver having to drive it springfield. When we went up there to get his stuff of the truck they were trying to lease him a brand new truck and lease me his old one. We both gave them some words of advice and found other jobs. If youre messin with my family you're messin with me. That's just how i roll. Plus when you complete your lease you can get a 3000 dollar completion bonus and lease another one or make a 20,000 dollar ballon payment and have it as your own.

That cutting your miles and twisting your arm to buy a new truck when the lease is almost up is nothing new . North American van lines got in big trouble doing that back in the 60's . An investigation showed they were making more money shafting lease/purchase contractors than they were moving household goods .

Schneider has a decent training program. I have a few friends that drive for them and are happy. For me the drawback would be how large they are. If you live east of the Mississippi, you might take a look at Millis Transfer also.

I would look for a smaller local company who trains if I were you. That way, you can actually get to know people in the office and other drivers to ask questions when you have them. Not sure where you live, but there is one in Indiana that I would recommend. Whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM TRUCK DRIVING SCHOOLS!!!! Go to an actual company and let them train you and fulfill your contract. After I went through a training program and drove, I became a recruiter (before I got into expediting). It was amazing what i learned about truck driving schools. They really have a tendency of putting the screws to people. I have the dirt on some of the major trucking companies too.

Funny you should mention that. There's a big stink about some of the major companies and their so-called training programs. Since the feds allowed trucking companies to start their own schools, some of these companies are making more training (and the resulting turnover, than they are from hauling freight. Do some research. You'll find Schneider is one of the companies making big bux from turnover.

I guess I had the wrong mind set. I'm thinking, from what I here, that there is a really bad driver shortage in the trucking sector. So, I'm thinking that they want me so bad that they'll catter to me or bend over backwards to hire me. I did'nt realize they would be screwin drivers so much. Give me the low down on which companies to avoid Brent email me. [email protected]

On the contrary... I've heard many stories of companies like JBHunt sticking it to veteran drivers, because it's their way of doing business. There are those who will take care of their drivers, but few, if any, who will pamper rookies just to fill a seat.

It's funny you should mention JBHunt there offering 40cpm after three months. I guess you just have to stay on everyones good side so you dont get screwed.
