Now, put that team in a straight truck... and you're gonna run - show dispatch that you can run, and they're gonna steer you towards the freight - 'cause you can carry more weight, and more freight.
Tractor Trailer Teams, you'll run even more.
Teams "Will" "in general" "from time to time" run out of expediting's "regular" freight lanes... I've heard of expediter teams in straight trucks doing runs all the way out to Seatle, WA and down to CA.
"regular" freight lanes (of Expediting) meaning I-65/I-75, Carolina's, VA, WV, NY, Steel Belt States... basically from MS/AL up to WI and east. including, but not limited to Ontario, Canada.
Teams are going to have a better chance (of more often) getting down to Laredo & El Paso, TX area's... There's alot of expedited freight that goes back and forth between Laredo and Detroit... and in/out of Toronto, Ontario area's - both on straight truck, tractor trailer -and cargo vans from time to time as well.
As far as numbers for straight truck, 'cause it sounds like that's what you want to do ('cause you mentioned straight trucks)
- there are teams on here that can offer a wealth of information on numbers in AND out of the pocket.
I've heard, now granted it's just what I myself has heard, is that expediter straight truck teams can get as much as 4,000+ miles a week, and as few as 1,800 miles. Though I believe the number is going to be much closer (on average) to the 4,000+ miles a week.
Every week is different, however it's usually consistent. There will be some teams on here that are sure to reply to this. I've heard tractor trailer team expediters tell me they've knocked out 5,500+ miles on a regular basis.
Fact, Teams will consistently run more miles than a solo.
With that in mind, Teams will be able to pay for their fuel easier than a solo, because they're knockin' out more miles.
You watch your fuel price - shop around, call T/S's ahead of you, and you'll make more money in your pocket,
if you're able to save a noticeable amount on the gallon.
Teams run all kinds of stuff too, Esp. from a straight truck. They do switches, where 2 straight trucks back up bumper to bumper (or meet at a switch dock, like an Averitt Express or OverNite Terminal) and move the freight from a solo truck onto the team truck.
They might do specialized stuff, like if the trucks got a lift gate and/or reefer, you might haul pharmicuticals water to water (coast to coast)- or wherever. You might haul A&E loads (Ammunition and Explosives). Government loads - not all A&E loads are government loads.
As a team, you're gonna have more of a chance of handling the freight, But when you do, it's likely going to be a cherry load too. Stuff like NYC handling glass or electronics. Convention runs. Festivals. Special events.
Teams get all kinds of freight,
alot of which solo's do not get -
mainly due to hours of service and schedules.
My 2 cents though, you said in your main post that you've been driving local in a straight truck solo.
While I can not give you "exact numbers", I can tell you this...
Going OTR, Team, in a Straight Truck - unless you're making an ungodly amount per hour or are on some really oddball salary set-up, you are going to make More Money OTR As a Team.
On the LOW Side, here's math that might help you -
Figuring the truck is making the team in it atleast .40 cpm and 4,000 miles a week... split down the middle. 20 cpm, at 2,000 miles per week... That's about 400 bucks a week per person -
Therefore you figure if the truck is makin' .60 cpm (to the team) then that's 600 bucks a week per person. Perhaps you can run it from there.
I know teams are making more, but I don't know how they work it. Read below...
Teams on here should be able to tell you what a:
team truck - properly equipped- should and should not have on it. Everything from E-track, straps, load bars, supplies and equipment.
Engines, truck set-ups and more. Shoot for that 96" sleeper!
I'm interested in seeing what they say myself.
There will be some teams on here that are sure to reply to this.
