There are lots of things Americans are fascinated with that I don't fully understand. Chia pets, pet rocks, reality TV, Asian women, gluten, horoscopes, organic foods that have nonetheless been slathered with organic pesticides, it's a long list.
The royal family thing brings in hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Over a million people each month go to London just see all the pomp and circumstance. I still love watching the changing of the guard. And with no Queen or King...no guard. I was in London in 1977 for the Queen's silver jubilee. I thought it was awesome.
