I'm sorry, if you want to pay a crappy rate, call a crappy carrier.
If I take a load, I'm giving you superior service. That comes at a premium.

Turning down a low cost load is an investment in my future.

They say their service is superior.

What would you do if you're dispatched for a load, you put the stuff in your truck, leave the shipper, then the carrier tells you "you know, this run is 10 cents cheaper, I couldn't get it at the regular rate"?

I would expect the carrier to cover the ten cents per mile if it wasn't discussed earlier.

Could you load a load and call the carrier and say "it's windy out here. Fuel mileage is poor today. I'm not delivering unless you ADD another 10 cpm to the rate " ?

My very first thought was to return the load back to the shipper. I know that'll be a bad move, but since they started lately to chop my rates whenever they want, they'd deserve a move like that...

I wouldn't return the load. I'd have a serious talk with the carrier.
After I'd explored other options.

When they called with the original rate you agreed to, they created a verbal contract. You are a contractor. I wouldn't take it back to the shipper but I'd pull over and talk to the "lemming's" manager.

Well, everyone wants the answer to be "say no to cheap freight" and in general that's the best answer but that's not an absolute answer. "Mr. Expediter, we'd like you to sign on with our company, Acme Widgets and Expediting, at a rate of 60cpm loaded plus fsc.". Well duh, no.

Sitting 3 days, presumably 3 weekdays not one weekday plus Saturday and Sunday, faced with the choice of 20cpm empty or 60cpm, presuming the same destination in both cases, then definitely the 60cpm. That at least covers the full cost of fuel, tires, belts, hoses, etc. etc. plus one meal along the way or afterward.

The point of all this is to make money not lose money. Oh, and unless this is a major fluke and I am certain of that, as soon as I get to my new location I tear the 3 day sitting spot out of the atlas to avoid the same problem again.

Leo, I'm afraid all you have left of your atlas, is the wire.

What carrier does that?

There becomes a point for any one person where cheap becomes to cheap. I don't mind being a high class hooker at times but becoming a lot lizard is going to far.

Well, it also depends on how much your Suga Daddy wants to pimp you out for. If you're getting .60 to service your johns, I suggest finding a different corner with a pimp who won't go digging in the gutters for customers.

I would begin by stopping at the side of the road, calculating how far I could go at the original cpm based on the dime reduction and then let dispatch know where I'd be delivering the load based on our agreed upon cpm. Then I'd offer to load and deliver it from that point at the side of the road to the consignee if they're interested in contracting and paying for that service.

I actually did that once and boy were they unhappy but too bad, we had an original agreement that I was prepared to honor and expected them to do the same.

Easy to say, hard to do it when you're dealing with Stalin. Or Hitler. Same cr*p!
