Reefer Box Question?

Can anyone tell me what a fair market price would be on a nice 2000 model 21' Alumabunk reefer body with a Carrier Supra underbody reefer would be?

I have seen AB reefer boxes and own a Kidron. In my opinion, no, used reefer boxes of those brands would not bring the same price. Kidron makes a significantly better product.

I don't want to say too much about this since I have not seen your specific reefer box. Manufacturing processes change. It may well be that the AB boxes I saw are different than the one AB made for you.

be careful of the carrier unit mine was a 2000 and had to replace it this spring there was a huge ammount of corrosion issues with it to the point that it was cheaper to buy new talked to several dealers and was told that it was a common problem as the supra undermounts are essentially a trailer mount cut in half and corrosion factors were not addressed.

Phil,
Thanks. I don't recall them making a box but like you I have a Kidron and am happy with it.

As for the reefer unit, if you can get a carrier dealer to check it out, that maybe the best thing to do.

It likely will have to have a EPA retrofit done on it. That year reefer can't be used in CA any longer. I think 2002 is the cut off.

Dave, Have you had a retrofit done before and can you tell me how expensive that it could be?

I have found a truck for sale with this unit on it. I do not know what the unit is worth and do not want to get in over my head. I really do not need the reefer at this point but may have a use for it later.

Any advice is appreciated from all that will help.

Not sure on the price. I would call a Carrier dealer in CA for something up to date and accurate.

If you do not need a reefer now, I would suggest that you do not buy one, especially one that is seven years old. As Dave pointed out, California regulations have already sunsetted older and unmodified reefers.

More importantly are the signs I sometimes see posted in Carrier dealers. They promote a rule of thumb (perhaps somewhat self serving) that the useful life of a reefer is seven years. They suggest that money spent keeping up a reefer older than that is better spent on a new reefer. Granted, they are talking mostly about food produce reefers that go on big trucks and run all the time. Still, the seven-year notion is worth considering.

Given the changing regulatory environment and increasingly particular standards for certain kinds of reefer freight, we are half expecting to replace our perfectly good reefer in five years or so. I don't know if that will be necessary but it is a move we are prepared to make.

$10.00 with the ALUMI BUNK box.
$10,500.00 to $15,00.00 without the box.
The box's from 2000 were worthless with foam panals and not sprayed foam. They leak and are of no value after a couple of years.
Do not buy any ALUMI BUNK refers unless you like trouble with a capitol T.
