Red Light Cameras

I sent the following letter to the Mayor and Aldermen of Selmer, TN and wanted to share it with my "coworkers" as mentioned below.

Gentlemen,

I unintentionally ran a red light in Selmer a few days ago and received a letter from a third party company demanding I send them $50. I went on line and learned that this for profit business is acting as your proxy in this matter. They install the equipment, monitor, review the results, send out "tickets" with a computer generated police officer's signature, receive payment and then send the local municipality a share of the "fine".

I do not mind the $50 going to Selmer, I made an error and deserve to pay for it but the idea of some private company citing me and demanding that I enrich them as a penalty is to me most galling. As this is obviously an agreement that the city of Selmer entered into for financial gain I have decided upon the following:

1. I will no longer do business in Selmer for food, drugs, meals, fuel, car purchases, clothing, furniture or anything else of value.

2. I will encourage my immediate and extended family to follow the action listed in number 1.

3. I will encourage my friends, neighbors and coworkers to follow the action listed in number 1.

I am not capable of fully explaining just how much I detest this type of George Orwell/Aldous Huxley police state privatization of your city's law enforcement so I will close with a wish. A wish that your system fails to provide the revenue the company promised when you were being courted and a further wish that Selmer return to traditional law enforcement.

For Selmer, "traditional law enforcement" means Bufford Pusser.

Here is the problem. Selmer isn't the only town/city using red light cameras. They aren't the only one splitting fines with the camera providers. That equipment is very expensive and imagine the fine for an officer seeing you do it. If they had to write tickets to pay for this as revenue it would be much more than $50. I too got a red light ticket in selmer when I lived there and I had to appear in court and pay $125 in fines.

You are out $50 and didn't have to appear in court, lose a work day and pay court costs, then I would say you won.

The threats about you taking business to other places isn't going to make the look twice at it. You are 1 person so they couldnt care less. If you want to drive to Jackson, bolivar,Corinth or savannah that is your decision.

Not being negative just saying as I figured out when I lived there that voicing your concerns to public officials does absolutely nothing.

About 3 weeks ago I was on A police escorted biker charity run the cop stopped traffic so we all could proceed through the red light and last week myself and others on that run got $50.00 tickets in the mail I went online to watch the video it showed the cop stopping traffic while we went through. I was going to fight it so I wouldn't get the points on my mvr then I saw on the bill that if you pay the fine they don't report it to DMV or your ins co so I paid it online. There were about 45 of us that day in Chesapeake VA. Should of fought it but $50.00 is cheaper than A lawer.

Yep! I mailed them a check but it was against my nature to do so. Sweetie was very insistent I do so. It was was better to upset myself than her.

Seems like that one could have been successfully fought with a phone call. 45 of them, for sure.

You messed up...that ticket is a "civil" citation..it was issued to the "licence plate holder or the "registered owner", not the drivers licence of the one driving the bike..they can't prove who was driving so it can't proceed as anything more then that because to do so would requires a "real police officer" to witness it and sign to the fact that he witnessed it and identified YOU as the driver...it can't go on your DMV report...because they can't prove you were in control of that bike...only that it is registered to you...

The crap they post about if you pay, it wont go on your DMV report is nothing more then a scare tactic...and it works when people don't do their homework...

I just read that artical about mn. sueing to get their money back, and am appalled at cities who will do this to their citizens, the mear fact that the company providing this service isn't even from america, they are from austrailia, more people need to protest to their cities and rebell over this crap, really 338 for a redlight, by a camera, that in itself is theivery, viva la revolution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

There are law suits all over the county on these redlight and speed camaras..I have a folder on my desktop on this crap....more and more people are just ignoring them...they are finding that nothing happens...RedFlex has tried to place a "Lien" on peoples credit report, but courts have thrown that trick out too...They cant prove who was driving , thats why those tickets go to the "registered owner" of the vehicle....
