Recruiters....

OK.. maybe this should be in the newbie section, even tho technically I'm not... but dang..

Recruiters crack me up

I've spent some time lately talking to different recruiters..comparing companies.... ya know, sometimes companies should call their recruiters and pretend to be a prospective driver just to see how they talk to people.

I'm not naming company names.. but I sure have talked to some total... well.... self absorbed, puffed up, arrogent, know-nothing blowhards!

NOTE TO RECRUITERS: Not everyone who calls you is stupid. Some people actually know what they're talking about. Some people are experienced actually know what it's really like out there. SOME people actually do their research(at someplace called Expediters Online :) )and know the right questions to ask to get the truth out, or make you stutter.

DO NOT start a call with "Shut Up and listen, I'll tell you everything you need to know"

conversely

DO tell me something! Don't just say, 'Well, I don't know what to say about the company, got any questions?"

And you know what? Not everyone already has a truck when they call you.... DEAL with it! Smart people don't buy until they know for sure which company they want... I know you make your recruiting pay off those desperate people who have a payment due in 30 days... and they're rushed to find a company....

but.. on the other hand..I am not impressed with.. "Are ya breathin? You're hired!!!"

It would help if you actually knew the answers to some questions.. ie pay rates, dispatch policies, How can you recruit if you don't know the answers to basic questions??????

The correct answer to ANY question is NOT "I'll have to check on that and get back to you." or... worse yet
"We'll cover the details of that in Orientation.. "

NOPE.... I don't think so!!!

If you don't know the answers to common questions, what the heck are you doing recruiting????? Do you think being rude and arrogent gets you quality drivers?

By contrast, I will say that one recruiter I talked to (who happens to frequent this board) was very professional..and had the answers to ALL my questions... what a concept.. WOW!

OK.. Flame OFF......

Hey Dreamer,

Got your email and returned to you my very lengthy email I sent to Tim. Let me know if you get it.

Re: recruiters

I agree, they should know their policies and procedures. BUT you know as well as I, the best way to get the "real" info about companies is to speak with people who run for them. AND, not just one driver either....talk to several and watch them all for their BS monitor.

I forgot to ask..who is recruiter here?

Recruiters Listen Up and Learn...

Dreamer, I have to agree.

If a person is going to plunk down $5K-80K for a truck they better have some knowledgeable answers to your questions.

I know that they are barraged from hundreds of unqualified people every week - but to be short and condescending is no way to get your message across.

I also know that there are some great professional Recruiters who are top notch in their field - I would like for them to speak up and add their two cents. The ones Dreamer referred to...well you need to get with the program.

See Dreamer that is where you’re wrong. You should expose the recruiter that told you to "shut up and listen". Personally I would have hung up on his as-s, then called the company he works for and filed a complaint on him. These Recruiter give the good ones a very bad name. There is no free lunch!!! So get with the program!!!

Up until this site was born we expediters had no way of getting the word out except to meet on a lay over and talk to one another. The companies got away with doing anything and could treat its drivers like crap and no one would know about it for months. As time moves forward and the internet becomes more and more knowledgeable to people, Recruiters and companies aren’t going to get away with that archaic way of doing what they want to whom they want. Not many years ago I knew some dispatchers that would get 10% cash from some drivers of every trip they gave that driver. Today this type of behavior isn’t being done so often, more and more are getting cot and fired. Up till now the Recruiter was the one to call all the shots on a phone call or at an interview because a newbie didn’t have the means to research like they have today. It’s time we drivers and even newbie’s start exposing these archaic Recruiters that think they know all about this business. Hopefully in the future the companies will see how valuable this site and others like it are and won’t really need recruiters to recruit, persay! if you know what I mean? Because of this site Newbies are actually interviewing the companies and like you are looking for answers. It's time the recruiters get with the program. Here are some links to site that may help someone in an interview: http://www.bc.edu/offices/careers/skills/interview/onweb/ http://www.jobweb.com/Resources/Library/Interviews/Interviewers_92_01.htm
Apply it to your situation!!!

Maybe the next time you call a Recruiter tape the conversation (tell him first) and play it back to the company CEO, or COO. If you can’t get satisfaction call the trucken radio shows and let them in on it. Bet you get results then!!! We don’t need people in this sector of this profession who for 1, think they are gods, 2, don’t know what they are doing and 3, may give someone wrong info that could be harmful or unsafe.

Tony, I agree, I think people should be identified by name. But,,, we should also identify the good ones too. The ones that are helpful and provide the answers to all questions asked of them, it's OK to say I don't have the answer to that question, but I will get back to you. That is,,, if they do get back to you with the correct answer. Let's identify the good as well as the bad. We don't have to be at their mercy, we can work as team!!!! Let's flush out the bad ones, and lets help the good ones by provideing their names to those that need them.

My dad was approached by a recruiter from a big co. a few weeks ago, and instead of walking away he just decided to play stupid as this guy gave him his spiel. Simply put, it was this recruiter's job to get the company 150 units by the beginning of the summer. It was like listening to a salesman at Honest Al's used cars. It was all ear-candy, but figures that were overly inflated and a lot of open ended answers to questions. The simple rule with recruiters is the old saying "If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is."

before you sign on with 'Company Big' just because you think their sign looks cool, or you met a driver who said he makes 6 figures running solo (don't they all?)

I kid you not.. I called one recruiting number today, and after about 5 rings I had a conversation like this:

He: "Hello"
Me..."hello? is this 'X company'?"
He: "Yeah..."
Me.. after waiting... "is this recruiting?"
He.. "yeah".
Silence....
Me.. "Are you a recruiter?"
He.. "yeah, whaddaya need?" (yep, like that)
Me.. "OK... I'd like to get some info about your company"
He...(heavy sigh)What kinda truck you got?
Me... Well, I don't have (interrupted at this point..)
HE... well what are you gonna DRIVE then if you don't have a truck?
Me... OK... I'm researching BEFORE I commit to a payment? But I'm planning to buy a van..(interrupted again)
He.. Well, if it won't haul 2500 pounds you're just wasting my time.."
Me...OK....I know what kind of van it takes.. I just wanted to get INFO about YOUR company...
He... Heavy sigh again.. OK.. what?...

Me.. dude... never mind....

Another guy.. I talked to a while back, I can't even remember what company it was, I've crossed several off my list.. LOL

I asked him what they're paying vans and/ straight trucks... he says x% of the pay.. so I asked what that would equate to in dollars and cents.. or could he give me a range 'On Average"... he did not know, but would guess a range of 50 cents to 1.50.. I said that's a darn big range...., also he could not tell me what kind of miles they were averaging per week, or what average percentage of deadhead was.... Excuse me.. but shouldnt' these be basic questions? I asked him bluntly.. how can you recruit, if you don't know what you pay? His answer.. well, I usually dont' get asked those questions// most people just wanna know what they can make a year...

I'M sold! sign me up! yeppers!

By contrast, the other one I talked to this evening..(after business hours I might ad, I tried just in case someone was there).. answered with the name of the company, was polite, HAD ANSWERS and as a plus, actually knew my nic when I mentioned this forum!

I had no idea who he was before today, had never spoke to him before, he didn't know me, and yet...he was polite.. will I go with his company? Dunno... but... he's definately on my list to call back.. why? Common courtesy. .. didn't treat me like I was bothering him...and answered my questions without a 'snow job' and had 'realistic' numbers that coincided with what I know from experience, talking to drivers from his company and this board.

Thanks dude!

OK.. I'm done again!

Flame off!
