Re: Multiple memberships

Personally I believe the admins should do a big housecleaning, getting rid of dead wood (maybe anyone with over 30 posts who hasn't posted in a two years, anyone with under 30 posts who hasn't posted in one year?), as well as dual posters, unless the admins, in their sole discretion, are aware of a valid reason why any one presence should have 2 identities.

PS Hey Lawrence, forgive me if this is a dumb question, I don't know how this stuff works, but would that help save some bandwidth if you hauled away the debris? :D

No problem. It has been mostly answered already - but I'll add this, we have thousands of members who register and never make a single post - but we see that they login and read. There are features that are disabled in guest mode - so many will register to view - pictures or classifieds or whatever. From time to time, we will remove accounts that have dead email accounts.

One username is all anyone needs. If someone is in such a big broo-ha-ha with their carrier isn't it a little late for them to try seeking protection under a secret identity? A secret identity is only going to work for someone who is going to premeditatively conduct covert warfare against another user of the forum. It's really just another form of drive-by posting. We are already wonderful enough to one another without adding alternate identities to the mix. If there is an individual with extenuating circumstances that would require a new identity, I don't think eo would have a problem reassigning the individual a new name, but then it would still be one name for the one user. There are email and pm options for conveying more sensitive conversations.

Pjjj,
I just want to correct something, it wasn't my carrier that monitors me, it is my former employer. They watch a lot of these boards to 'listen' in on information about their shipments to find leaks but for me it is a contractual thing.

The real question is whether a carrier should be on a website as a member outside of a recruiter. I don't think they should and I know one transportation company has a team looking at the different sites for disparaging remarks about the carrier and making notes.

The problem I have with that is the ethics or lack of ethics of people which leads to abuses when information is used against a contractor behind the scenes. I know from practical experience that the larger the company, more often the abuse goes on unchecked and there is no accountability what so ever. In the case of websites with contractors, I feel it is unethical to have employees of a company as part of a community at large without disclosing who they are within the company in both their intros and signature lines, what they do in that company and making clear who they represent. If they are recruiters, than that should be what they have in their signature line but if they are casual members, then what purpose do they serve for the members?

I know on another transportation related site there are two people falsely representing themselves as contractors, they are in fact employees of this large company. It may happen here too but......

Well, speaking of multiple identities, Marvinkwagner and Iceroadtrucker are both logged in right now.

See I'm in a pickle when it comes to bad mouthing my carrier. If I do it then I'm gonna see it whether I use another screen name or not. I guess I would have to call myself into my office and give myself a warning first go round. Then if it continues I might would have to consider terminating myself. I didn't know this gig would be this confusing. j/k

On a serious note... not posting anything that could come back and bite you in the rear is always a good rule of thumb. One thing one my professors told me in college is that employers have been known to google people's name and look at their myspace and facebook accounts before hiring the person. So I guess they wouldn't like that picture on my facebook of me drinking a beer on the beach in a speedo?

Please, please, PLEASE make sure to NOT give me your facebook address. Joking aside, I'm old enough that I say whatever is on my mind however what I say is also true. I presume that will protect me if/when the situation warrants.

What is a FaceBook? I assume since I have no idea what it is that I don't have an address. I don't think I have a need for or want one whatever it is.

Facebook, my space and twitter are sort of hot places for social networking. Some think it is a great place to meet people while others think it gives the person a feeling of significants in their lives by being just a face in the crowd.

It's a social networking site kinda like myspace. The only reason I use it is to keep my extended family up to date with I'm doing since most of them are on there. Back on topic... If you are worried about something coming back on you keep it to yourself or send it in a private message.

No, I am not worried about things coming back on me. I just had no idea what it was. I only have a vague idea what MySpace is. I have never looked at or even wanted to look at that stuff. I guess my age is showing!!! :D
