Rates?

Have a question........I drive for a local courier service, we have a couple accounts we do longer trips for (Ohio to GA, SC, TN,IL). I am having an ongoing debate with my traffic manager about rates and am wondering: What is a typical per-mile rate (average) for expedite loads in a B unit? (Owner/operator). I know we are far below what you all do them for, since most of our business is within about 150 mile radius and the couriers operate differently than the expediters. Somebody please give me some accurate figures and help me make more money!!!

You will find a wide range of rates for vans in the expedite business, 75 cents to $1.10 or highter, but the average seems to be about
.90 to $1.00 per loaded mile.

Thanks so much for the info. It is as I suspected... we ain't making squat. These trips only amount to about 5-10% of our business, but lately we've been doing them on a weekly basis and there is talk of expanding more into the expediting end of things. We drivers have been squealing forever about getting backhaul freight and it appears "they" may finally be listening, but they have waaay distorted ideas about the market. We are making only about 65-75 cents a mile now, and these morons are talking about hitting the market with 70 cents per mile billed rate!!! I said NO STOP UH UH. You CANNOT do that. Better do your homework, boys. They don't seem to understand the difference between couriers and expediters. But I have a dream......I will educate these numbskulls if it kills me!

If your planning on contracting a van, I would look seriously at the larger fleets, the government allows .32 to .35 cents deduction for mileage if it didn't cost that to run you wouldn't get. When was the last time the government offered you money. Most expeditors pay percentage, I believe Panther ii might pay mileage. I don't think there's much room for profit under 1.10 with at least a 30-50% backhaul rate. In my opion the larger units more than pay for theirselves in utilty and increase revenue, with a tall box Straight trks can load Partials if no expedites are poppin.
