Posts have been edited to reflect places, dates, and times.

Most interesting (for me) is the time difference between Picture #2 and Picture #3 in the first post - about an hour.

First pic was heading east out of Portland, second pic was well after Pendleton and Deadman's Pass at Cabbage Hill, down on US 95 at the OR/ID border southwest of Boise.

In between the first and second pics were the Blue Mountains.

Beautiful pics. Three cheers for Lewis and Clark, and more importantly, Sacagawea. The American Northwest is awesome.

I've got a Canon PowerShot S2 IS. The current semi-equivalent model is the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS. I got mine in '05. All the newer ones have more pixels, mine's a 5 MP camera. But Dollar for Dollar, it's a lot of camera for the buck, especially for a point-n-shoot, aleit an advanced point-n-shoot. It's got that great Canon lens (best non-SLR lens there is) which is the main thing, and is why 5MP on this camera is better than 12MP on a lot of cameras. I's got a 12X optical zoom, where most cameras in that price range (at the time) only had a 3x zoom. I also have a 1.54X lens adapter for it that works extremely well, turning it into a 18.48x optical zoom, which is great for antelope in Wyoming.

The newer generation cameras have more pixels and HD video (mine does 640x480 at 30 fps and records stereo sound, something that only dedicated video cameras did when I got this one) and many have higher zooms.

If I wasn't on the road I'd get a Canon EOS Rebel or something, but that's more money than I want to risk in a truck. I paid about $400 for this one, plus another $400 for zoom and wide angle lenses, adapters and filters. It would be at least twice that $800 if I went with an SLR like a Rebel.

But, this one is everything from fully automatic to fully manual, and everything in between. Mainly, it allows me to take great pictures of RV's like this one:

Really beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing!

I have a Konica Minolta DiMage Z20. It's 5 MP and has 8x optical zoom. It takes good pictures but the zoom is crappy. I did have the DiMage Z10 which was 3.2 MP and 8x optical zoom that took much better pictures and had a much better zoom (even though the two models are supposed to have the same zoom) but it got broken when it somehow ended up under the truck seat.

I bought the Z20 to replace the Z10 because I thought it would be an upgrade. I should have just bought another Z10. I'll just live with this one until I can buy something better.

There are lots of digital camera reviews sites out there, four big ones, but only three that are the cream of the crop. These three sites give in-depth reviews, comparisons, lots of sample images, and honest comments about digital cameras.

The largest and most comprehensive with a small army of writers and reviewers.
Digital Photography Review

Aimed more towards the consumer end rather than the professional.
Digital Camera Resource

Another with a small army of people who run the site, all dedicated to testing and reviews.
The Imaging Resource

I wouldn't consider buying a camera without first going through these sites in detail about the camera I was interested in, as well as getting ideas on alternatives. These reviews are insanely detailed, including how to use the cameras, the features, etc. Excellent overviews at the end with all the pros and cons. These are the three sites that get quoted the most in the press. They tell you want to look for, what's important and not important, and all highly ethical and will be just brutal in a review if it calls for it, regardless of their advertisers. All have forums for tips, tricks and advice for specific models.

Thanks for the advice and the links Turtle. I'll bookmark them and definitely do some comparison reading before my next camera purchase. :)

Another great resource for image comparison is P-Base
PBase.com
Where you can do a search by camera/lens of images.
They have a great selection of images from point and shoot to professional..
Great images Turtle and Dan!
Maybe we could do another pic-a-day theme as a lot of folks have cameras...
