Racist observation

Truth be known, New Oreleans is almost my second home,if such a phrase is acurate.
I have been going to New Oreleans since 1990 for business, sometimes once a month. My biggest mining account was headquartered there until last year, when they moved most of corproate heads to Phoenix as part of a aquisition of another mining company.
I have followed the local politics for many years, including the debacle on the state level.
Non of this is really note worthy as the state has a history of crooked government as long as there have been bribes, bribers. and bribe takers.
What is noteworthy is NOLA. It is the birth place of the only true American music, jazz, growing from blues that grew from the songs of the slaves . It was music of their native land, West Africa, primarly what is now Mali ,and other sub Sahara countries.
On my first trip to Mali,I basked in the local clubs scene in Bamako. The local music was rife with classic delta licks and wailing songs of dispair. We would not be able to call this collective and important piece of our national treasure ours if it were not for New Orleans : the musical melting pot of our country. What a shame that would be.

I fully understand that many on this site would tell me to go pound sand,it's really Dollylworld that is the center of our cultural world. Good old Branson baby, you just can't beat it for music and fried food. This post is not written with them in mind. Please,go have a Dolly of a good time.
Over the years I have spent in NOLA,I've sat in with many of the local musicians that play for the tourists. They come from all over the world to visiit one of the most important cities in our country,a mecca for many from outside our borders. Crime is real, and they need to be careful,as in all of our communities, unfortunantly.

Having made close friends with many black residents through music,I was always welcomed to their homes in the Lower 9th Ward for dinner, barbques and jam sessions. I was always treated by all in attendence as a friend, not a white friend,a fellow musician and friend. These relationships went on for 15 years until Katrina took out their part of the city.
My good friends Florida and Philip Dreaeur lost everything, including a grand child and a daughter. Philip was a bus driver in NOLA for 35 years and Florida drove a cab. Philip was also a sax player par excellance. They became part of my family and me theirs.I have never had closer friends, people I trusted more,or were more honest and full of love in their hearts, and hard working.

The morning of Katrina,I was leaving for 3 weeks in Europe for a much needed vacation. It was at the height of the ugliest of the ugly time of dubyas failed monarchy.
When I arrived in Paris, the only thing on Parisians minds was the hurricane and their beloved sister city. When they realized I was American, all the French haudiness was gone, they remembered how to speak english.Their genuine concern about NOLA was expressed with tears at times.I told them to celebrate with music and prey for those living in the squaller of post Katrina (well documanted on European TV) as a result of Bush's policy towards less fortunate Americans.Unfortunanly, his complete bumbling cost us even more disgrace oversea's then the joke of Iraq.
My point is,if you never leave America,it's easy to make value judgements based on Fox looped BS and local politicians in NOLA, But there's a bigger picture folks. A much bigger picture, which explains why Americans go to Branson by the bus loads and europeans and Japanese(true lovers of American jazz) flock to NOLA. It's importance transcends anything any other major city in our country (except San Fran ofcourse) has to offer of any real value. It's why when I go to NOLA it's always a pilgrimage, even after probably 50 or 60 visits.
Philip and Florida relocated to Baton Rouge, and have retired. However, they always send me Chistmas cards and we talk regularly. We have treasures in this country that count,it's why NOLA ,even if it' is someday reduced to a muddy pit,has more signifigance and historical value in that mud then Dollylworld ,Vegas and Dizzyworld well ever dream of having.

I have no doubt there are innumerable good and valuable people in NO. I believe for those who enjoy that style of music there is nowhere better. I've been only a few times but enjoyed my visits. The glowing report further confirms it however it doesn't change the facts of the absolute failure not of Bush but of Nagan et al. Had Bush gone to NO and spent a couple of days he'd have been excoriated for stealing the limelight and diverting attention. He chose not to do that so he's excoriated for not spending time there uselessly. It also doesn't minimize the facts of the looting and crime that hasn't gone on in all the various areas currently flooding. The blue/red differences still stand relative to natural disasters.

Always seems like a mad rush to blame poor George. His screw ups were after the fact. Amazing how short memories can be.
Yep...it was Nagin and their governor that screwed up.
The federal government can't go into a state to do anything until it is requested. That request came a day late when all the problems started. Those people should have been evacuated a day earlier. Not much Bush could have done to prevent that.
The reality still exists in that there was a big difference with reaction time and cleanup when comparing LA to MS or AL.
Also a big difference on what money went where.
Now, the nineth ward is pretty much split between Houston and Dallas.
And still, no one can explain the difference between why MS and AL recovered much differently than NO.

Missed this earlier, but a nice follow up to this thread.

Dave, with all due respect, the issue is actually much deepr then Katrina. In fact, the Federal Government does hold ultimate resposibility for national disaster repsonse. It is well documented that the disfunction between FEMA, the National Hurrican Center and block head boy was a complete joke.Block head boy failed to respond to 5 days worth of warnings. The National Hurricane Center told brownie and his lame posse that it was inevitable, and to be prepared for such an event.DO SOMETHIG. Their response was to shine it on,and poo poo the entire thing until the s**t hit the fan. Do your homework. When it was evident to the entire world that Katrina was the big one, still no reponse. It is incorrect to say that the biggering between state politicians was to blame. That's why we have federal jurisdiction to over ride states in national emergencies for Gods sake.
Just like Bush and the $4.00 gas answer,"nobody's told me "he was a dim light bulb along with brown nose boy and once again all the evidence pointed to a complete lack of rediness on the part of this joke of an adminsitration.Top to bottom.
Even Arnold gets it and he's an actor!! He has been forward looking and put money into our CalFire division early in his administration.Wanna know why? because he LISTENED TO THE EXPERTS ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING AND WEATHER PATTERNS.Jurisdictions work together and finger pointing is not tolorated.
I know you would not change your 2 votes for dim light bulb boy,and will defend him and his mishandling of every single thing he's done, but the world watched him without his virtual pants on and clueless THROUGH OUT THE DISASTER. Katrina was just a mundane distraction for him. It was to be expceted and he did not let us down.In fact,if he got one thing right,we would probably vote to give him a comic book library for all his navarious contributions to the near total failure of his profoundly inept 8 years. Katrina just happens to be the shinning moment of all his domestic belly flops.
I hope I'm understood,as this thread is rediculous at this point and I've work to do. Let's move on.
Always a pleasure Dave KC.

Now, the nineth ward is pretty much split between Houston and Dallas.

Yea, what's up with this?

These people are not legal residence of N.O. but of Dallas and Houston, and they get to vote like they are in N.O. - don't we have laws against voter fraud?

And Tallcal, I really enjoyed that post, it brought back some memories of another time in another town where it was just as good to live in as N.O. before Katrina - Charleston.

Amazingly Hurricane Hugo did land a few miles north of the city, on the Isle of Palms but there were no levees to protect the city and the battery took a beating as did the downtown area. Where my house stood, there was a lot of damage, and I didn’t have levees protecting it from the storm surge which took my front deck off the house and the wind took the A/C and half the roof with it. It wasn't that bad though as N.O., they knew it was coming and the city, which has faced these storms head on before, prepared well in advance for it. We didn't have a Nagin calling the shots and being wishy washy, but we had Mayor Joe Riley (who is also a Democrat Mayor) who made decisions with experience – maybe why he is in his ninth term?

If the city took the N.O. route, we would have first have to have said that Bush Senior was ignoring the population, especially the blacks in the downtown area off of I26. then cry because the more historical buildings and places suffered, which then we would have demanded that the city get all these things to distribute to the population; credit cards, cell phones and free hotel space for our out of town families. I could go on but the point is that the city did come back, my house was fixed, and people survived. People pulled together and a lot of things were done to improve the city for the city’s sake and for safety. The one thing is, N.O. will never ever be like Charleston, there is a distinct difference between the two in culture, attitude and most of all tourists. One major difference is Charleston moved forward where N.O. is still stuck in the past by ignoring the people and worrying about music and homes for people based on hobbies/profession.

One of my good old friends from my music days,Chris "Easter" Etheridge, former bass player for The Flying Burrito Brothers, and The Byrds(Sweethert Of The Opera album)lives in Meridian, home of Peavy Amps.

The Byrds "Sweetheart of the Opera" was a major turning point for both rock and opera. For young drugged up rockers it was now cool to visit the opera house. The Byrds rendition of Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere Figaro" even brought die hard folkies into the opera houses.

"Sweetheart Of The Opera" also paved the way for such rock/opera bands as The Marshall Tucker Band, Eagles and Pure Prairie League.

In the late 80's and early 90's rock opera was revived by Lyle Lovett and Uncle Tupelo.

How ****ing cool to have known a rock/opera pioneer, man! Too bad he's not like a minority or somethin'. Possibly he's gay?

Greg - great comparison of N.O. with Charleston. Our family has vacationed almost every summer on Wild Dunes and my wife's uncle has a house on the beach there. We had a first hand look after the hurricaine, and the devastation from Hugo was incredible. However, Charleston came back good as new. Apparently, it doesn't go any good to attempt to explain the roles of "first responders" and who they are to liberals. Time and again it's been documented that local and state governments are responsible for this duty, but their pathological hatred for Bush seems to snuff out any glimmer of reason. Thus, it's useless to banter words with dedicated fanatics.

TC, why is it you (liberals) feel compelled to proclaim your spouse is of a different race, you run on the beach with gay lesbian and trans gender people and that you will vote for a presidential candidate because he is black? While the rest of us go about our lives marrying, voting and interacting with people of different races and sexual orientation with no fanfare!

Are you that insecure with your beliefs that you must engage in this liberal oneupmanship to validate your standing among your peers?

Dollyworld?? Where's that? Maybe TC is referring to DollyWOOD in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN. I can't imagine the sophisticated CA types going there (especially if they don't even know the name) - for that matter, I don't much like the place either. I live about an hour away and do my best to stay away from that whole crowded overbuilt area, especially in the summer when it's teeming with flatlanders, swarming into the area from all over the country to spend millions of their hard-earned dollars in dish barns, knife museums, corny dinner theaters and countless other tourist traps. His reference to the fat, stupid rednecks that are so unique to the south brings to mind an experience I had the last - and only - time I went to Dollywood about 10 years ago with my wife's company outing there. As we arrived, two busloads of "rednecks" were unloading their mullet-headed, tobacco-chewing group with their fat wives and children all dressed in matching green camo outfits. Where do you suppose they were from - Alabama? Maybe South Carolina? No...MICHIGAN!! Turned out they were a militia group no less, on a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains. For all I know these were actually decent, hard-working people having a good time on a trip down south. But they certainly fit the visual stereotype that so many people have of the typical good ole boys that only live south of the Mason-Dixon line. My point is, the types of people on "COPS" that supposedly only live in the south can actually be found anywhere in the country. Who actually watches that kind of show anyway?

Moot,
I do feel there is a large insecurity issue among many liberals because they have to interject race or disability or something to set them apart from the rest. I also think there is a lot of guilt within these people, it shows by saying that they have to vote for somebody different. The biggest issue I have with them is that they go through all these strides and efforts to make sure that others think like they do and act like they do but the very history of their movement has been one of repression and hate.

Like the old PSA that ran with the kid in the row boat with his dad or granddad. The kid is explaining that he was called racist and the guy asked him who said it - "my Jewish friend Jimmy said it" Yep nothing like telling a kid who is innocent and using identifiers that he can relate to that he is a racist pig!

I was told by a friend after trying to be PC that I don't have to use the words "African-American" because he and his family feels that it sets them apart from everyone else and demeans them in such a way as that it really feels that you are calling them names. He said black is acceptable term that can be used but he would just preferred being called by his first name so as to describe situations, I use black but as a friend, I use Cal.

Getting back to the original subject of the thread: putting a billion in perspective - I'm paraphrasing from an e-mail I got the other day.

A billion seconds ago it was 1976

A billion minutes ago Jesus Christ was alive.

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number - what does it mean?

A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.
B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

Remember that all of those BILLION$ are coming from those of us that work for a living and pay taxes. I wonder if the current victims of the Mississippi river flooding will get the same consideration?

What an excellent observation from someone so mundane. Heck, I was married to a Youpper, that's someone from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and I NEVER made a big deal of it. I just treated it like I was married to a regular person.

Let's forget about race for a second. We had two cities devastated by Katrina, New Orleans and Biloxi. New Orleans got the lions share of the media coverage. Could it be that people standing there complaining that Bush wasn't in their front yard with a shovel and rake made a more interesting story than people that simply went about the business of cleaning up the mess? Regardless of skin pigmentation, the people of Biloxi went to work while the people of New Orleans expected someone to do it for them.

Great fish analogy, Turtle.

Greg, you mentioned Hugo and Charleston....We were there as well. I remember FEMA didn't even get there for a few days. I also remember the broadcast...if you live in Charleston county GET OUT NOW! If you live on the islands and refuse to leave, give us your next of kin because we won't come to get you. Charlestons police chief, on looters....shoot them, because we have no jail to house them in. Charlestonians came together and helped eachother, just like the people of Mississippi, just like the people in the Midwest.
That's the difference.

Is the following a racist observation?

I have been following a lot of the midwestern floods as Grace and I have many friends in some of these regions.

What I find of interest is that in the midwestern floods, I have heard no cries for money cards, free food, FEMA trailers, and guaranteed employment and relocation fees to other locations.
Amazingly, there hasn't been one report of looting.

Compared to Katrina, I am wondering if Barber (MS governor) called NO residents a bunch of babies seeking entitlements on everything. He took some major heat for those comments, but quite frankly, I think he may be right.

It is really sad when I start looking at the two situations.

Was curious as to others observations.

I don't recall trailers being moved to the low country when Hugo came to visit, or did I miss something camping out on what remained of my deck, fighting off surfers who thought they owned the place.
