OK First no one hires anyone in this business as the norm, they are contracted to do the work. A driver who doesn't own their own van is a sub-contractor. Personally I would not even consider getting into this business as a driver for a van owner - too many vans are way too cheap to buy.

Second to answer your question - a Class C CDL is what is accepted by most but not all companies. SOME do not require any (I think Express-1 is one) and some require a class B (rare)/

Then I recommend you don't try this at all. There are things that can happen that will leave you in a worse situation than you started out with.

The first couple of weeks is the hardest. I had nothing when I came here but now I'm caught up on bills and doing good with a positive bank account.

Build that bank account as much as you can, for this business, she's a cold hearted fickle witch...one day she loves you, the next day she leaves you.

The pros to team driving are easy: more money, companionship, help on getting the work done, two heads to work on a problem [or look for errors or alternate ideas] vs just one.
The cons are more potential for conflict [one wants to go home, the other doesn't, one is a worker, the other a slacker, one is a neat freak, the other a slob, etc] and after awhile, it drives most unrelated [married] teams apart.
Living and working together 24/7 in the space of a truck takes the commitment of marriage for most folks - the best intentions to stick together get worn away sooner [most teams] or later [a few truly dedicated & compatible souls].
