i have no experience in expediting and had a couple of questions. do you have to have a cdl to drive a 3/4 or 1 ton cargo van? do you have to keep a log book and hos regs in these vans? thanks

If you are going to haul any hazmat you will need a CDL and you will have to log. If you're with a smaller company or do not haul Hazmat you do not have to have a cdl. Check with the companies that you are thinking of signing on with. And since you're new you might want to spend some time going through the archives in the different forums. There is a lot of very valuable information here. Good Luck

Vans under 10,001 pounds are not regulated by the federal government, so you don't need a CDL to operate one commercially; however, some carriers haul Hazmat on vans so under these circumstances you'll need a hazmat endorsement on a CDL.

No Log Books unless carrying 1000 pound, of hazmat, including container.

We're told the NY state and AL require vans to log, but I've had no problem with this.

No HOS for non-hazmat van; however, many carriers impose a milage limit on van operators in order to comply with spirit of the HOS regulations. It's the safe thing to do.
