Question about Detroiter Truck Stop

I have been out of expediting for a few years now and just recently returned. I took a load to Warren, MI the other day and decided to stop at the Detroiter like I used to several years ago but when I pulled up EVERYTHING was diffrent and I saw no expeditors parked in their lot and a sign that said "Cars Only 2 hour limit." Can anyone tell me what happened, that used to be THE spot to sit and wait on a load.

Expediters still park at the Detroiter, but not as many because not many think you still can. A lot of them park at the old AlumaBunk (which is now a cross-dock facility).

At the Detroiter, you have to go back there with the Big Trucks. The guy at the Toll Booth can tell you, but you go straight thru the toll booth all the way to the back. Don't go into the little Werner Playpen, but park right in front of that retailing wall for the Playpen. You can park parallel to it, or t-bone it, either way. No charge for vans and Sprinters, just wave at the Toll Booth guy as you go by. And you can pick up the free WiFi back there, too.

Really used to be the place. My grandfather had his company's first office in that truckstop when I was a kid. Him and my father worked there and I spent alot of time there as a child. It was clean and the people were great. Used to have a great breakfast buffet on weekends as well.

Youre so right, Mr. Elliot.Just goes to show how the economy has affected the auto indusry that has affected the local economy in that area. A domino effect. Remember when we could pull in there and there would be like 75 vans up front at the Detroiter and no one would be worried about getting out that day because freight was so strong? The same with Perrrysburg to the South.Incredible how it was back then. The #1 priority after a load back then was getting sleep, because you were sure to be bothered with another load quickly.Remember the hot dog girl and the shoe shine guy?And yes, the restaurant was awesome back in the day.Actually, the whole place was, but now, I am not so sure..Progress at it's finest..lol.

It was a great place to sit, talk with other expeditors and even better to get a load. When I worked at Pronto Emergency Freight and Con-Way Now I knew if I got to Detroit I would get a load in no time. Its a shame how liberal politicians have tried to destroy everything so many people worked hard for all these years with what they call "Progress", I call it Socialism!

Well, yeah, there's that, but to compound the problem is that every laid off auto worker thinks they can drive an expedited cargo van.

Well gee, Turtle, just about every laid off auto worker can DRIVE an expedited cargo van. That does not mean that they can make a go of it as a business. Driving a cargo van, expedited or not, is not that difficult. :p Driving it in a safe, competent manner is another story as well.

the detroiter has decided that they prefer local 4wheel customers. so they brought in ihop and banned expediters from front and side parking areas. the side parking lot next to tst locals never parked but we are still banned from there to. i have never seen hardly any locals there before. do to detroiters anti expediter policies i will not go there again.
i say boycot the detroiter

When I stopped at the booth, the guy said to go hide in the back where no one could see me. Don't know what that means.

Vans don't have to pay to park there. I've never seen a lot lizard there.

But, for various reasons, most van expediters won't go there anymore, and that's why I do - no van riff-raff, free parking and free WiFi.

I was raised around that area. It has ALWAYS been famous in the area for prostitution, drugs and all kinds of other "fun" stuff.

I always went to Millie's down the street for food, but it was a nice place to chat with fellow expeditors.I recall the first and second EO trade show or whatever it's called was held there and the K town freightliner guy, can't remember his name think he i think he's related to Lawrance drove the new Sprinter with the sleeper in it for all to see. Those were the days, think Edith and Archie in perfect harmony.

Don't forget Michael, the maintenance/lot cleaning guy. The first time I ever saw him, I thought he was a prowler of some sort. I told the guard, and he said, "Oh, that's Michael. He's ok." He told me he has a degree in computer science but because of his obvious emotional and/or mental limitations, he's stuck working cleanup there. Been there, what? 25 years?

The guard told me one time he saw Michael bent over, head and upper body in a trash can. He wasn't moving, so the guard thought something was wrong and went to check on him. Michael was ok; there was a newspaper at the bottom of the can and a story caught his eye, so he was bent over reading it.

Last time I went there, the hot dog cart was back. Didn't see the woman who ran it before, though. They don't serve them Chicago-style, though, so what's the point?

As for parking, I always disregard that prohibition on parking at IHOP. I always back into the back row of their lot and I've sat there a long time. Nobody ever said anything.

The last time there, I needed a shower but I had a half a tank. The lady said to top her off and she'd give me a shower. Really appreciated that.

Sorry for this but the place has always been a dump, remembering it in the '70s and 80's, it hasn't changed much. IHOP helped, getting rid of Citgo helped but outside of that, I rarely go there for any reason.

I usually pop in for the cheap books, and will probably be there Mon, [delivering in Detroit], but I never fuel or park there, because the pay to park [75 gal min!] ticks me off. I go down the road to Meijer, a much nicer place.
