QualComm & Occupation/Accident Insurance

What good carriers do not require weekly fee/insurance deductions? Our phone works better than the stupid QualComm we have and we have our own comprehensive insurance but our the company we are with seems to require (even though they say they don't) we buy insurance through their preferred company. We think we are paying way too much to be on with these guys. Are there any GOOD companies that can operate without saddling O/O's with these exhorbitant weekly charges/deductions?

The company you are looking for will be a small one. Another solution would be, to get your own authority. Some larger companies allow you to get your own insurance but will require QC or similar. Soon (I hope not) all commercial vehicles will be required to have eletronic devices (QC) to record HOS. Many drivers find QC to be a useful tool if their carrier has a good system. Generally QC is just another profit oportunity for the carrier. In some states carriers are required to supply Worksmen Comp or occupation/accident insurance. You already have this so you realize it can be a good thing. Unfortunatly this can also be another profit oportunity (commision, kick back) for a carrier.

The following is an excerpt from a E mail between myself and the Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation.
"It appears you were doing work driving a Cargo Van for them, Expedited Freight. This is not one of our requirements or an Ohio law."

the only way a carrier is required to provide it to you is if you are an employee, then its usually work comp. they may require it and give you access to it and charge you back for it if it is a state requirement or the carrier decides to make it a lease requirement. it is however a good idea to have it but i would purchase all insurances on your own as it is always less expensive than through the carrier.

Can you say more about this? More than once I have checked with truck insurance writers about WORK ACCIDENT insurance alternatives. They told me to continue with our carrier's policy because no one can beat the group coverage and rates we get through that plan.

Don't be so hard on the QC....having one has gotten me few loads over the time....some customers have to ability to see what trucks are available...and call the carrier as opposed to putting it up on a load board...they want the closest truck...and they want it now....Ever go to Eagle Pass? almost NO phone service once you get away from I35...nice to have a back-up in case of emergency.

Let's also think of the other thing called "FEE'S". Everything they do for you, with you or against you will make them a profit. Their is a small exception to the rule.;)

And what makes you think they are actually keeping up with the premiums ?
many large truckloads carrier are very quick to deduct it out of the contractor settlements sheet ,but are too greedy ,and never pay the insurance provider.
never place a 3rd party between yourself and the insurance carrier.
i have experienced it my self only a short year ago. with the truckload carrier being one of larges in the country. the poor drivers family lost ALL they ever worked for, once a massive claim needed to be paid for .
