Just got off the phone with OmniTracs. The MCP100 is discontinued. The MCP50 is the currently suggested unit. It is $799 to purchase and $31.95 per month unlimited usage on a 1 year contract down to $27.95 per month unlimited usage on a 5 year contract. He says it should communicate fine with any carrier that currently communicates with the other units. I can provide contact info if anyone is serious about getting their own instead of using the company unit.

I imagine there is taxes on top of that. If it breaks down who pays? 35 isn't sounding all that bad.

Does that include the GPS feature and how much is the scanner?

I wish I would have gone that route. I just had the MCP 50 installed today.

31.95/month is 383.40/year. Add the initial price of $799 to that and you would pay $1182.40 the first year. Sure beats the rental fee of $35/week or $1820/year for ever.

With those number a carrier with 1000 trucks that charges $35.00 a week would taken in $1,820,000.00. After you take out the $335,400.00 that Qualcom charges the carrier you would have $1,484,600.00 left over. Now some of that would be used for repairs, but not 1.4 million a year.

After further research it might require buying the mcp200 which is about $3500 and about $10/week usage. That would make it about 2 years and 30 weeks to break even at $35 per week. More of a gamble than the 13 weeks to pay for the unit and a few more to break even on weekly expense. Still for someone who's been at it as long as Moot it would save a really big pile of money.

GPS and scanner? Are these features of the MCP50? All I got with my unit was a laminated place mat describing the electronic log feature and a small accordion-fold primer that dealt mostly with the electronic log. Panther isn't very forthcoming with information about this QC. Like how to initially log on. Knowledge is dangerous. That's why they keep it locked up in a secure room at Pantherville and only deal it out in small quantities.

So QC replaced the last piece of crap unit with another out dated piece of crap unit. I love paying almost $2000 a year for garbage.

When I first started expediting Con-Way Now was using Highway Master. Going from that to QualComm was like going from Pong to Pac Man.
