Besides a bat, what else is out there that you could legally bring with you OTR to prtect your self? I read in another forum, the problem at truck stops.

A 4 d-cell Maglite would help you see in the dark.

If you think that maybe you might possibly be alergic to bee stings, that wasp and hornet spray will shoot about 20 feet.

A tire thumper might be better than a bat or other implement not normally found in a truck.

Unfortunately your right to protect yourself isn't as important as the criminal's safety and well being. Our friend's the Clintons, Kennedys, Schumers, Feinsteins et al are closer and better friends of the criminals and therefore have participated in and contributed to the dilution of Article Two as well as various other initiatives to further protect criminals and place honest citizens at risk.

Because of this, possessing a bat or tire iron in the cab within reach would almost assuredly guarantee your being detained or possibly charged. Wasp spray would be iffy although an argument could be made they sometimes attempt to nest beneath the cargo box and it's needed. You may be questioned as to why it isn't in a side box though. The 4 or 5 D cell flashlight or a tire thumper are probably the easiest items to defend possession of. Yes, defend. Our liberal friends will indict you, at least unofficially, if you dare to defend yourself from a criminal. That's not politically correct and also is very rude and thoughtless on your part.

We need to take back Article Two but our previously mentioned liberal friends will see to it our Constitution continues to be ignored and disrespected. Good luck with staying safe.

i am new to running the road...3 months now.. i have been in some ruff places... i also hold two black belts.. so i dont worry that much, the best defence is to use your head....you know when something is not right,i had a flat a week ago in chiago on 55th street and had to change it,(3.00 in the morning) i was not going to run on the rim.... your body language will tell the bad guys how easy its going to be... if confronted by some one look him in the eyes and do not look away till he does...most of the time that will end it.. if some one has a gun or knife just give them what thay want.... in todays world most of the hoodlems carry a gun, so the pepper spray, and the flash light and stun gun will most likley get you hurt..i used to work at dunkin donuts in westland mi (baker).. a guy came in and tried to hold up the store, me and a girl was the only ones in the store i had just walked out of the rest room and was outside of the counter and he was yelling at her and said he had a gun...i thought he was just a punk kid he had his hands in his coat pocket, i thought he was just pointing his finger thru his coat. when it was over he was on the floor spitting out his dinner... well he did have a gun and i just about passed out... he went to jail for five years(not long enough) so the best thing to do is use your head (only fight back when you have no choice)....randy

Well, there goes your invitation to Hilary's Inauguration! :p
Really, Leo, aren't you exaggerating just a wee bit? Some of us leftist liberal types actually believe that the men who wrote the Constitution knew what they were talking about, and they included the right to bear arms for a good reason. I'm sure they'd have included the right to carry concealed too, had it occurred to them, because we need every advantage we can get against those who would harm us.
And don't the criminals who sue the victims make the news precisely because it's so outrageous?
The ones to keep an eye on, I think, are the judges. Like the ones in Ohio who decided that victims of hit & run drivers aren't eligible to collect for medical or funeral expenses from the state's 40 million fund for Victims of Violent Crime?!
Eternal vigilance is ##### straight!

I wish I were exaggerating. You are right about the judges as well. Actually, the founding fathers did mean and include concealed carry in Article Two. It doesn't say arms must be born displayed, only that the right to bear them won't be infringed. Unfortunately it is infringed all the time. We're at a stage where civil disobedience is often the only way to adequately protect oneself. It's sad when we've had a quarter century of Kennesaw, GA. and Morton Grove, IL. clearly illustrating how wrong the left is on this issue.

A martial art, as stated, is another good addition to the list of available defenses. Stun guns are not, because they are illegal in many jurisdictions, as well as when crossing the border I believe. The best thing, as mentioned, is to use your brain and avoid situations you don't want to be in. Frequently a drive of an extra 15-20 miles will take you from a terrible place to a fairly decent place to overnight.

I wasn't expecting an invitation to the inauguration, Condi and I aren't that tight. :+

Retired cop here. Anytime I had contact with any trucker, they always described any item as a "tire thumper". We both knew what it was for and I was fine with it. I personally carry the large flashlight at night into the rest areas. Makes me remember to thump the tires and allows me to thump anything else that may need a thump. As stated by another, good common sense is best; if it doesn't look right it probaly isn't. I never do anything at a rest area that I can't do standing upright(I know, way too much info here) and always lock the truck...there are those that watch. Be safe out there.

>The next pair of boots you buy get steel toes...they hurt,
>and you ve always got em with ya.

An excellent point I didn't think to mention because they are second nature to me. I wear steel toe shoes or boots year-round, selecting based on the temperature. Not only are they available for protection from 'vermin' if need be but also protect you while working in general. Red Wing is my choice but there are any number of good ones.

Being aware of your surroundings is one of the best ways to stay safe.

As mentioned earlier show confidence, criminals are predators and like other predators in nature they will attack the weakest prey. Running from the attacker at the first opportunity you get can also be an option.

Also if a person has a firearm you are better to give them any material items they demand. Possesions can be replaced but you only have one life. Do not ever leave with the criminal your chances of being injured or killed are greatly increased.

The large flashlight and spray disinfectant or deodorizers are easily explained why they are in easy reach.

Martial Arts or personal defence training are good ways to build your confidence, and self esteem. Mental preparedness is also very important, you will need to make decisions very quickly and they must be decisive. Once you commit to defending yourself you must be able to incapicitate the attacker. The mind must go from white to black if it only goes to gray you will probally be badly injured or dead. Remember this quote " It is better to be tried by twelve than to be carried by six "

Although I still prefer my "two-dog" security solution, (It beats Lojack, protection AND companionship), I agree with those who posted about being aware of your surroundings. As a former State Trooper I've seen where this can really help. It also reminds me of a quick story before I entered the expedite world, when I was just doing local and occasional regional runs out of South Jersey. During the original Gulf War, I delivered a huge piec of medicl machinery up to New Hampshire. For a helper, I took a freind of mine's brother. On the way home, on the Cross Bronx in N.Y. at 2AM, a few exits from the GW Bridge, my wife paged me. (PRE-CELL PHONE DAYS). I thought it might be a courier service thats PHILLY/NY/PHILLY overnight line haul would break down once in a while and we would bail them out. I'm thinking this would be great. What are the chances of me being up here (at this time it would have to be a New york pick-up), and I can make more much needed money, BUT, before I'm going to divert to Lower Manhattan, I have to make sure. SO, with no cell phones yet, I have to call before I cross the bridge, or pay the outrageous toll and go out of my way coming back to NY. I had to pull over into a seedy Bronx exit to use a pay phone, (I disinfected). My helper was tough but young looking, and I'm fairly big, but hey it was a bad area. Realizing this, I acted like a nut, screaming and cursing as I talked to my wife on the phone, then talking to myself and yelling at my helper. The night denizens kept away from me, they thought I was more deranged then them as we jumped into the truck and down the west Side Hwy to make some extra money on the way home!

Here's a tip that a veteran female driver on another site gave me that helps me sleep a little better.

Before turning in to get some sleep connect a strap across the inside of the cab from door handle to door handle and tighten it snug. If someone breaks the glass to gain access to the cab it is one more thing they have to deal with before they can open the door. It might just be the extra time you need to react and protect yourself .

Think about it Wasp& Hornet spray. It shoots a 25ft stream. Get it in their eyes it's sure going to hurt. Will give you time to get away.Best thing is not to get into a situation where you're going to need some kind of procetion.Always find a well lighted truck stop or wal-mart parking lot.
