Although I still prefer my "two-dog" security solution, (It beats Lojack, protection AND companionship), I agree with those who posted about being aware of your surroundings. As a former State Trooper I've seen where this can really help. It also reminds me of a quick story before I entered the expedite world, when I was just doing local and occasional regional runs out of South Jersey. During the original Gulf War, I delivered a huge piec of medicl machinery up to New Hampshire. For a helper, I took a freind of mine's brother. On the way home, on the Cross Bronx in N.Y. at 2AM, a few exits from the GW Bridge, my wife paged me. (PRE-CELL PHONE DAYS). I thought it might be a courier service thats PHILLY/NY/PHILLY overnight line haul would break down once in a while and we would bail them out. I'm thinking this would be great. What are the chances of me being up here (at this time it would have to be a New york pick-up), and I can make more much needed money, BUT, before I'm going to divert to Lower Manhattan, I have to make sure. SO, with no cell phones yet, I have to call before I cross the bridge, or pay the outrageous toll and go out of my way coming back to NY. I had to pull over into a seedy Bronx exit to use a pay phone, (I disinfected). My helper was tough but young looking, and I'm fairly big, but hey it was a bad area. Realizing this, I acted like a nut, screaming and cursing as I talked to my wife on the phone, then talking to myself and yelling at my helper. The night denizens kept away from me, they thought I was more deranged then them as we jumped into the truck and down the west Side Hwy to make some extra money on the way home!
