When I was growing up, car or truck the dash board was metal not padded plastic. Children rode standing up in the front seat no matter who was driving. Mom or Pop. Myself and my friends all seemed to survive. We rode on running boards or in pick up beds. IF we met a policeman (don't recall any police women back then) they would wave. Not engage in pursuit. :p
P.S. "What if" doesn't matter. Nothing happened.

Our entire system of laws is based on "What if"

PS As Aristotle mentioned, the laws requiring car seats and seat belts [and helmets] are to protect society from the catastrophic costs of injuries - but they don't seem to have helped the cost of medical care [or insurance] go down any.....

They did. Instead of a million dollar brain surgery, we're talking a thousand dollar concussion.

U know what I miss at my grandmas old house is eating the lead paint and making handgranades out of old metal 35mm film canisters filled with carbide pellets and water, boy , those were the days. U could set those canisters by a black widow spider or a wasps nest and it was history . We went fishing with old cherry bombs sinking them after we lit them, man did those bream come to the service, good eaten too.
We all were younger once and normal boys growing up.

I have a truck, loaded guns, cigarettes, sharp objects scattered about...

But do you run with scissors?

Problem is now there are laws against it now, because people are idiots or one person with people in a truckbed got hurt and sued.
Trying to outsmart natural selection, the stupid got killed and that's the way it was!!!
