Right there is part of your problem. Michigan is a no fault state.

Don't worry, I also tried with my Texas address... it looks like I have to stick with the large companies that offer their own insurance...

Multi-carrier guys

Can/will you pay $1000 per month insurance and keep doing it ?
If no, how high will you go before giving up your independence ?

I could make a thousand dollars a month for insurance work. I would go out and find my own customers to contract with directly. The problem with the multi-carrier vanners is that they don't know how to sell themselves properly. You have to find direct contracts. I bet there are a lot of contracts to find out here in, California. There are a lot of air fright companies in, Long Beach. But for now I'm going to stick with Express Family and maybe one other company. In the meantime I'll be fining for my own authority and Motor Carrier number just in case I find myself a good broker to work with. Any suggestions?

Oh, and I got my insurance coverage from a company other than Progressive. My commercial insurance company covers long haul trucking companies and expediting companies. I do not have a 500 mile radius mile restriction. My sprinter is covered anywhere in the country. When you have a 500 mile radius restriction on your policy and you have a bad accident, they can deny coverage if you are technically out of your mileage radius. This is not always the case because everyone is allowed to go outside their mileage area every now and again. But if the insurance company decide to audit your company and your truck/trucks regularly travel outside your mileage area, your damage or freight claim can be legally denied! Pretty scary stuff right?

Hi Guys,

To hopefully offer clarification to this thread...

Progressive offers Expediters an Unlimited radius for Cargo Vans, Sprinters and Straight Trucks in all states. Tractors are offered an Unlimited radius in most states by designated Truck Insurance Specialists appointed by Progressive.

Two other companies, Berkshire Hathaway and National Interstate offer this radius plus Progressive’s same “Primary Non-Contributory Liability” and “Care, Custody and Control” endorsements required for an Owner Operator’s policy to “trigger” correctly in the “Multi” structure.

These endorsements are not “automatically” on a policy…they need to be “added” by the Agent.

Grange, Auto Owners, Farmers, Erie, American Family, etc., do not offer these endorsements for the Owner Operator’s policy so the Agent can’t add it.

Their policies are designed for local delivery on units that do not cross over state lines where FMCSA and 91X come into play in trucking for hire on any sized unit in Expediting.

The risk of denied coverage occurs when an Owner Operator misrepresents themselves as an entity not operating under the authority of a Motor Carrier, where a 400 mile radius limitation is the least of your worries.

These Insurance companies are within their rights to deny coverage for an Owner Operator when they learn you are hauling under a Motor Carrier at the time of loss.

Multi Motor Carriers that accept policies from Owner Operators that will not trigger correctly are exposing the Owner Operator and other Motor Carriers and Brokers to uncovered losses.

Please read my prior blogs on this subject with a new one to follow shortly. If anyone needs clarification, I invite you to call John or I in the office 877.864.1511.

I continue to search for other options for all of us.

I'm thinking that if you're not with a company that writes a lot of trucks, like Great Western, or an agent you know does like CIS or OOIDA, it might be a good idea to have a lawyer look over the policy.

If your brother-in-law, the life insurance salesman hooks you up I'd spend some shekels to have it looked at.
I'd spell out my operation in writing and have the lawyer assure me I have the coverage I need.

What would be worse than having an accident and after paying premiums finding out you have no coverage ?

It's easier to just use a truck insurance agent.

Zorry is dead on. Problem is it seems many would rather pay for cheap policies that do not meet the legal requirements or cover what the operation is truly doing. 4500 to 5k for liability is pretty normal and that doesn't include phys dam or bobtail. If you are paying way less it's a quick red flag that you are running with improper coverage. Eventually it will catch up wig anyone.

One of the places the "bottom feeders" will make a cut and claim they are making a profit on .60 cent a mile van load.

We have had a major incident while under Progressive Insurance and have CIS as our agent. I can attest to the peace of mind that we had knowing CIS was in our corner even though everything went smoothly and did not have to argue anything. We had the coverage we thought we had and they covered what they said they would cover. When the chips are down we knew we had made the right choice with CIS and they will continue to be our choice.

All I can think of is what a nightmare to have a claim as big as ours was and have a fly by night insurance that did not cover half the stuff that had to be replaced on our truck.

Our truck was down over a month getting repaired and through all of that Progressive representatives were in touch with us. They kept us informed of what was being done to our truck as we continued hauling freight in a Expedite Services truck. All around if we had to have an accident we had the perfect accident with everything from the police, CIS, and Expedite Services helping us to continue making a living while our main source of income was being repaired.

Thanks for coming in and explaining what is going on Shelly.

Let's skip the outrageous prices that some of you are ok with these numbers, the big issue with Regressive, oopsy, progressive, is that they want now all the money down.

I seem remember they are an insurance company, not a bank.....need financing, a load....go to a bank....need insurance, go to an insurance company..just saying....I know insurance companies did finance policies and have monthly, bi yearly payment plans.....but i guess CASH is the rule of the day....crap happens

I wasn't talking about mileage restrictions on regular physical damage policies for expediters, or those who are not running under their own MC Number. I was just saying that Progressive is geared more towards the single truck owner, or a fleet owner. Progressive does not offer a lot of choices for actual trucking companies. They also do not provide fleet coverage for large sized trucking carriers. They are great for the vans, sprinters, straight trucks, and for single tractor trailer owners. But I would not use Progressive to start up a trucking company.

I don't think progressive offers coverage for trucking companies.

So write the check or go to the bank you use and do a loan for the amount and make the payments, no different then making payments to the insurance company. It's all a tax deduction at the end of the year. Insurance is one of those costs that should be built in to your business plan.

Let's be fair.
If you're going along making monthly payments and you combine a large increase with the loss of the payment plan, it can be unsettling.

It'd be an unsecured loan at a bank.
Harder to get and at a higher rate.
While insurance was part of the plan, since one was paying monthly, having to pay a lump sum on short notice, could be upsetting.

A marginal operational may not be able to pull it off. ( not referring to anyone in particular).

This changing insurance climate may have people making choices because of insurance rather than personal preferences.

Two lessons here.
Don't burn bridges when leaving a fairly decent larger carrier.
Research and understand insurance before making a move.

I was surprised once that I had to get unladen liability after making a carrier change.
It wasn't a deal changer, but surely limited my choices as it was very hard to get for a one truck operation at the time.

Businessman first, driver second. Really applies here when looking at insurance. Numerous factors to know including cost and coverage. As a fleet owner, it is amazing how much time gets spent on just insurance issues. Claims and everything involved in them can take months or years to deal with.
