Hi Guys,
To hopefully offer clarification to this thread...
Progressive offers Expediters an Unlimited radius for Cargo Vans, Sprinters and Straight Trucks in all states. Tractors are offered an Unlimited radius in most states by designated Truck Insurance Specialists appointed by Progressive.
Two other companies, Berkshire Hathaway and National Interstate offer this radius plus Progressive’s same “Primary Non-Contributory Liability” and “Care, Custody and Control” endorsements required for an Owner Operator’s policy to “trigger” correctly in the “Multi” structure.
These endorsements are not “automatically” on a policy…they need to be “added” by the Agent.
Grange, Auto Owners, Farmers, Erie, American Family, etc., do not offer these endorsements for the Owner Operator’s policy so the Agent can’t add it.
Their policies are designed for local delivery on units that do not cross over state lines where FMCSA and 91X come into play in trucking for hire on any sized unit in Expediting.
The risk of denied coverage occurs when an Owner Operator misrepresents themselves as an entity not operating under the authority of a Motor Carrier, where a 400 mile radius limitation is the least of your worries.
These Insurance companies are within their rights to deny coverage for an Owner Operator when they learn you are hauling under a Motor Carrier at the time of loss.
Multi Motor Carriers that accept policies from Owner Operators that will not trigger correctly are exposing the Owner Operator and other Motor Carriers and Brokers to uncovered losses.
Please read my prior blogs on this subject with a new one to follow shortly. If anyone needs clarification, I invite you to call John or I in the office 877.864.1511.
I continue to search for other options for all of us.
