What I see my boyfriend do: shave every morning. At shipper/receiver: comb hair, make sure clothes are clean (will change into a clean shirt if there's spots on the one he's wearing), mouthwash, organized paperwork on a clipboard with a pen, organized cargohold - ready for loading/unloading. Oversees the loading/unloading, has tie down straps at the ready and begins strapping immediately when loaded. Clean van, please and thank you, have a good day.

He is well aware of his role as the carrier's representative.

Big boy pants, lace up shoes with socks, button front shirt, company cap, proper English, polite vocabulary, proper paperwork. Basically I try to look/think/act in a way that the CEO would be inclined to select me as one of the recipients of a bonus if there were some to hand out.

I try to be organized and presentable. I have all my load information on a single form that also includes all the carrier's information, like phone and fax numbers, and other information that the company includes in their contact information on their website. This way I have something I can hand them instead of trading scribbled notes... When I open the doors in back the vehicle is ready for unloading or loading. One of my last stops mentioned how nice it was to have a vehicle ready for unload for a change. They said most cargo vans had to unload "half their junk" before getting to the freight. I haven't seen that many vans in that bad a shape, but that was the customer talking. The shipper and consignee are not places to pick up chicks. I am there to represent the freight and all the companies involved, and I try to behave accordingly.

Also try doing a general forum search for "uniform". A little bit to weed through, but there are related discussions.

I wouldn't get hung up on your age. You project "underaged" if you keep it in the back of your mind. Act like you belong there, and no one will notice.

By acting like you belong, you get some perks. We saw the Harley-Davidson assembly procedures start to finish.

As for personal presentation, I forgot to mention: baby wipes.

That's pretty much my M.O. also, except I don't shave every morning and I don't comb my hairl

But there are those ones...no matter how jovial you are, they are just-crusty. Most times Jeff can break down the wall with his smile and batting those baby blues; sometimes nothing works but he has to keep up the nice act. He was severely tested once near Cleveland at a shipper when the loaders were mf'ing this and mf'ing that while loading the freight willy nilly. He had to make them stop, restart and guide them. Regarding their language, he nicely told them a lady was present (I dunno, I didn't see her). I am sure you have all been in that spot. He kept his cool, but he wasn't as laid back as normal. Still and yet he knew he couldn't in good conscience stoop to their level. That's all a part of professionalism.

A Team has had some post about this. I am surprised they haven't responded. I was in field service for 15 years. Often seeing the customer for the first time when their equipment was down. Not always a happy camper. First I always gave them a handshake and made eye connect. Be courteous, even if they were not. Getting into urinating contest is a no win situation. When the call was finished I made it a point to connect the customer, again shake his hand and ALWAYS thank him for his business. Even if he was a PITA. And of course pay attention to dress and grooming points mentioned above. If because of being up against the clock grooming are dress is not quite up to par apologize for the lap. This lets the customer know that this is not your normal look. Almost all will understand. After all he needs his fright ASAP. Or at least thinks he does. And last if you think there might be a problem. Document and notify your dispatcher/agent ASAP so they don't get blind sided. Jerry Lee
