We have to look at the big picture in 1935-36 when Hitler decided to violate the Treaty of Versailles and re-militarize Germany. Both Britain and France were obligated to respond to this, but both chose to do nothing; so Chamberlain wasn't alone in his appeasement. When Hitler's troops crossed into the Rhineland in 1936 England was in an economic depression and France was in political turmoil during an election year. Meanwhile, Hitler was preaching pacifist propaganda. France's army alone could've crushed the Nazi troops then and there, and stopped the German militarization. Hitler could've been imprisoned for violations of treaties made after WW1, and WW2 might never have happened.
"The French Army, with its one hundred divisions, never budged against the 30,000 lightly armed German soldiers occupying the Rhineland, even though France and Britain were both obligated to preserve the demilitarized zone by the Treaty of Versailles and the subsequent Locarno Pact of mutual assistance."
So how does this relate to today's world? Recession is taking hold in Europe and the US, combined with our current political turmoil and lack of leadership. Look at Ukraine right now and remember the agreement the US and others made with them in exchange for surrendering their nuclear weapons. Next consider China's attitude towards Taiwan, what they might do there, and the total incompetence of our current Commander in Chief.
It's going to be a bumpy ride for the next two years.
