I think we'll see a replay of 2001. The discounts will get deeper. The freight base will be the same. Some of the fly-by-night smaller outfits will fold, the big outfits will have heavy turnover,as they will try to maintain large fleets, to accomodate the ebb and flow. Guys that work, and stay out there will make a living. Lots of trucks will go back to the repo man. Same poop, different day. So keep smiling!:7

i think that's about right, also would find a good company to trip
lease on the side with to, think tughillrunner has the right ideal
took his advice and found a company that will work with on that trip
lease once and while to keep going, if i had know what i know now would not had as much of a problem as in 95 when it was tough

I have questions about trip leasing. I have my own authority. With the trip leasing, are we looking at small manufacturing companies, companies that ship finished products to sign on with, other expediting companies or all of the above? Are they local runs or over the road?

Hello Larry,

If you have your own Authority and insurance - you do not need to trip lease. You can run that freight under your own MC number.

Hey Bill!!!
Is this a sign of having to much time on one hands? or is this a direct result of the expediting industry? ...LOL...:D

The local Newspaper where i live had an article today that stated the economy would be in a upswing this spring. These are course ther economic Gru!s that said to buy Enron and Lucent etc. I always get amazed at how these 4th rate analysts can decide how and when the economy will respond. WE are the economy and much of what we do is based on what the media reports. Good example is me.Our D unit is 5.5 years old,has 567,000 miles on it and should be replaced,But when I read about all the layoffs in the manufacturing and high tech sectors, that monthly payment of $0.00 sure is nice.
I feel that 2002 will bring some major shakeups in the expediting field.Last year I didn!t run much above I 40 (YEA) but when I did I always see new companies doing this work. Every time I go North there is BillyBob!s Express, Rocket Freight etc, they all take away a small amount of business that used to flow to the major playes in this industry.Their overhead is very small compared to Tri state,Fedex CC,Panther and so on. So the competition will eat the large oufits who will have to discount more and more to keep their customer base. As long as there is a pool of contractor/drivers willing to accept these rates they will stay afloat. They will not cut their staffing but will accept reductions and loose quality experienced drivers in their fleets.
So what does all this mean.I think there will be some mergers down the road in order to reduce overhead. The smart drivers have a reseve to get them through difficult times(1995) and will mange to stay on.I don!t think switching companies every 3-6 months works out well. Two weeks ago in SanAntonio Tx we were offered a run from Cotulla TX to Laredo (55 miles) to rescue a load from a stranded C truck. Deadhead to the transfer point was 144 miles, then I would have to use my $450.00 pallet jack to transfer this cargo and have a return deadhead to San Antonio (150 miles). All this for $85.00,and they wonder why people quit. After refusing this the TPS Dispatcher called and said" My refusal was unacceptable and she was going to write me up"..So I said"OK you do that".We are thinkuing seriously of getting out of this business and getting back into the real world, which is scarey.LOL Happy New Year Oh and Bill ,White Castle stock jumped 10 points after your last post..

Oh boy, there goes 19 year old Becky trying to scare someone again! And they wonder why people at FeCC try to kill their dispatchers. I'd have said "Ok Becky (or whatever her real name was) I'll do it but I'm naming MY price. Does $600.00 sound OK to you?" She would have started crying, believe me. Somebody should write her up for idiocy.
Now to the subject at hand- The future..
It's going to be a slow winter, as usual, but there will be stuff to do so keep that truck running and don't shut down till March. Spring and summer should be busy, provided no terrorists bomb anything again, so jack a few grand into your truck now while it's slow to be ready. The dealers told me my truck was worth next to nothing again (as they have the last three years), but here again, I'll show them a thing or two. Money in my pocket=no money in theirs. After this summer, I'll let you know how fall should be if I'm still alive.

A little of both Tony!. I have been waiting here in cold and snowy Fort Wayne waiting for Santa to contact me tellin me that my tropical island is ready and Jennifer is there eating oysters, waiting for my arrival! I am beginning to lose faith. And to think I cleared my entire social calendar for this! :'(

They say idle hands are the devils workshop. And in my case they are an industrial complex :p So I have to fill the void somehow.
