If you wanted to drive out of Ft Wayne Indiana why not just call North American. depending on your experience they have a bunch of different divisions out of that terminal.

It does depend on the current economy as to which division they are running the hardest right now( they will shut down certain divisons if its slow) but they have Household, Tradeshow, Electronics, Crane Service ( my personal favorite) Flat Bed, Climate Controlled div., and I think Auto hauling. Its a myth that you need to have just tractor trailer exp they have straight trucks running out of there too. you can transfer in and out of divisions until you find one you like.

They offer a pretty large performance bonus if you are in service at the end of the quarter.paid quarterly I think my biggest one was like 4500.00

They will also treat you like a king during orientation, its long usually starts on a Tuesday and runs to the following Tuesday with the weekend in the middle off, they will pay for your hotel and give you spending per diem while there and provide your breakfast and lunch while in class (which are usually small maybe 10-12 people)

You will also get an advertising allowance each year around February which used to be about 250.00 that you can use in the company store...clothing, jackets, stuff with their name on it etc. you dont have to pay it back.

they also will provide you with shuttle service to and from your hotel and anywhere on the compound.

Just a thought for you anyway.

I saw one I saw one!!

At first I thought they only had the one van I saw broke down. I just spotted a sprinter headed west on I70 at the PA/MD line. Tiny little 12X12 sticker with their name and their DOT info stuck on it, crooked. No wonder they are so hard to spot. Could not raise him on the CB so I got no info out of him. Sorry.

George,

My wife and I did G S, Hitachi Data Systems, Climatic etc. several years ago. Many things have changed since 2001 when we left. The one thing that hasn't changed is they do not sign expediter trucks..The Colubus D.C.,which is the only D.C. that the Agents kept when they bought 'Electrinics and High value products', uses box trucks and expediter trucks for local delivery.Keep in mind that the Columbus D.C. covers a large area Oh,Mi,In,some of Pa and areas where demand is there. North American has never signed expediters and until they can figure out how to keep them loaded, probably never will.
Quite frankly George,if the new group ,Specialized Transportation Services, signed expediters,I would be signed with them..and I check regularly.
Don't blow too much smoke...

I was talking about straight trucks not expediters, it sounded like the guy was looking for a new company to go with, not expediters per say.Infact I never mentioned expediters at all.. I have been affiliated with North American most of my life so I'm not trying to blow smoke. My family sold their Agency on Long Island in 1975 but we still have a truck leased to FTW

after conversing with people on this site I see that our decision to buy a swimming pool construction company instead of putting some trucks on somewhere else will be far more profitable.Anyone need a pool?

I met a columbus D/C employee one time and he helped me load some Tennant floor sweepers, he didnt have much money but I told him to try the NAVL program and I found out that he is now one of the top earners over there. I admit I wasn't happy about the Allied Merger 2/99 but its a changing world.

I just know there is going to be some SA comment about hiding under a desk or a dashboard and the CB so just for the record I'm so old we used cans and string back then.

George,
The Allied merger was what a lot of people might think the beginning of the end for N.A.V.L. . I agree..The recent purchase of High Value Products by the agents was a new lease on life for The old N.A.V.L. The new Company is "Specialized Transportation Services" it encompasses Climatic,Electronics,Hitachi data systems, etc.I think Crane,Flatbed and Auto transport do not exist anylonger.Although there were some crane trailers still around but they were bulked into General Service and they were not talking about replacing them.
The investment group that took over from the railroad basically through ignorance destroyed the N.A.V.L. organization. History
has shown us that investment firms only understand the bottom line and know nothing about the trucking business.During deregulation many trucking companies were taken over by investment firms. The percentage of failure was unbelievable.N.A.V.L. nearly became one of those statistics.

I respect your years with North American. You've seen the best and the worse.

Be sure to touch base with the driver that posted in the General forum. He is currently with all types. And does not seem to like it.

FYI
Again, "don't shoot the messenger"

SPECIAL REPORT: OOIDA files class action against North American Van Lines

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and six of its owner-operator members have filed a class action against North American Van Lines in federal court in Roanoke, VA. The complaint was filed on behalf of all owner-operators moving freight under North American’s federal operating authority. The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief and damages for wide ranging violations of the federal truth-in-leasing regulations.

The complaint challenges North American’s business practices toward its independent drivers. At the most fundamental level, federal law requires that the relationship between the carrier and driver must be governed by a written agreement. The suit alleges that hundreds of owner-operators have driven for North American for many years with no written agreement.

The complaint alleges that North American unlawfully reduces the revenue base from shipments on which owner-operator compensation is calculated, and that North American does not provide drivers with required information and documentation that would allow them to check the accuracy of amounts paid to them for their services.

North American, like most motor carriers, reports state fuel use taxes on a fleet-wide basis. Drivers pay the fuel tax at the pump, and receive credits for amounts overpaid in various states. The complaint alleges that North American confiscates driver credits if the credit is not offset within 30 days, which is in violation of the escrow provisions of the federal leasing regulations.

The complaint states that North American requires drivers to contribute to a fund that North American uses to pay its public liability insurance and to cover the cost of certain government required safety and compliance programs. The plaintiffs contend that federal law places the obligation for those payments solely on the motor carrier, and that passing through or charging back the cost of them to drivers is improper. It is further alleged that unused funds are forfeited to North American, violating the requirement that such money be returned to drivers.

Lastly, the complaint alleges that owner-operators are forced to purchase certain products and services from the Fort Wayne, IN-based carrier as a condition of receiving freight assignments. The suit states that drivers must purchase through North American public liability and property damage insurance, full valuation cargo insurance, credit card services and Qualcomm communications equipment. The forced purchase of products and services is prohibited under the federal truth-in-leasing regulations.

Many drivers with N.A.V.L. accepted the deduction for "workmans comp." as the cost of doing business, although most didn't care for it much. After all, it was $.03-4 cpm.
Back in 1998-2001 we were making a lot of $'s,but we knew it was only a matter of time before they were made to answer for their actions.
In May 2001 we were told by the Insurance arm, which was Allied rather than N.A.V.L., that our outside insurance carrier must provide $2,000,000.00 of Liability. This was an increase from the accepted $1,000,000.00 which is an Industry wide practice. Our carrier "Great West" did not provide that much liability so along with other issues,we elected to retire from "Big Truck" hauling. That was the final straw from a company that, since the takeover by the investment group, was headed for the heap.
Congratulations and good luck to the principals in the class action suit..

It seems like every 5 or 6 years N.A.V.L has some type of legal trouble. This goes well back into the 80's when they were doing a lease purchase plan which entailed selling trucks at a high price, and then cutting their freight off. They would then repo the truck and resell it to the next driver. They did this for years until they went to court and lost.
It has always seemed to a drivers disadvantage to lease a truck from the ones that are supplying the freight.
