Please don't feed the homeless

I wonder why the law was passed?

The law was passed because many more fortunate people don't want to see the less fortunate - especially the homeless. They tend to be unsightly and even smelly, and sometimes act unpredictably, you know [mentally ill].
To some extent, all that is true, but the people still need to eat, fer cryinoutloud.
Bravo to those who step up with the food!

Interesting note: one of my favorite authors, GM Ford [is that an unforgettable name, or what?!] likes to use a group of homeless alcoholics as 'undercover observers' in his books, helping a private investigator. It makes perfect sense, they can lounge around for hours and no one sees them.

I did not see anything that stated why the law was passed. I was thinking more along the lines of safety issues, traffic, etc.

Those are the reasons cited for objecting to truckstops - homeless people don't drive.
The reasons are generally stated as residents' complaints about public intoxication & urination [but maybe if there were a bathroom, they'd use it], only we all know better: businesspeople don't want them around because they offend the customers. Even if they're behaving perfectly well, and just want to eat, they make people uncomfortable.
It's a tough problem - some of them truly are offensive, but telling them to "just go away" is not a good answer.

Large numbers of people waiting for handouts can interfere with traffic, both foot and vehicle.

Loitering could also be a problem. Anti-loitering laws are again starting to be enforced in Detroit. Groups of two or three people hang around on street corners and then they steal or carjack cars. Been LOTS of video of it in "action" on Detroit TV channels the last two days. It is a growing problem.

I would like to see what the city cites as the reason for the law. Not that they could be believed either. It would still be nice to have both sides of the story. Just so we know which one to laugh at first.

So does Michigan, BUT, I was stopped from donating, professionally butchered, wrapped and frozen venison, to the local battered women's shelter. My wife had been taking over venison on an annual basis for almost 10 years when Monroe County stopped it, citing USDA regulations. That's all I know. I now give will not give away any excess meat to anyone unless I know them personally AND know that they really could use the help and will use the meat.

That is unbelievable, how could they? Was the meat fresh or frozen?
How do you know how much meat you will use for the year?

If it is important to you, here are many links to donate venison to charities in Michigan. You can also internet search Michigan venison donation.

I kill no more than 2 per year, normally only one. I use a either a bolt action rifle, a muzzle loader or a single shot shot gun. I never have to use more than one shot per deer and rarely have to track them as most drop where they stand.
You sound like an unbelievably good hunter. Even heart shot deer will usually run 50 to 100 yards. What is your secret to being such an improbably adept hunter and marksman?

The law against not distributing food in the park in Raleigh was passed many years ago, likely for health, safety and sanitary reasons. The church (and at least 2 other groups) have been distributing food there on the sidewalk next to the park for years. They used to do it in the park, but the law said they can't, so they stopped that and moved to the sidewalk. No one had any problem with that. The Salvation Army is located directly across the street from the park, but a few months ago the city bought that building and land to be used for development, and the Salvation Army moved a few blocks north. Prior to the sale of the land being final most of the homeless would use the Salvation Army property on which to eat their free meals, but once the land was sold to the city they couldn't do that anymore, so they naturally migrated back across the street into the park, which blurred the lines between sidewalk and park.

There are also some issues with the homeless shelter around the corner from the old Salvation Army building, as their status has recently changed. This past Sunday, after the police wouldn't let them distribute food on Saturday, they were back to distributing food, but were using the parking lot next to the old Salvation Army building. They were unable to contact the parking lot owner before they did this, so they just ended up paying for the parking spaces they were using. The parking lot owner eventually was contacted and came down, and said he didn't have a problem with it other than they'd have to get their own liability insurance, because he wouldn't and couldn't be responsible if anyone got hurt on the property.

The police were enforcing the law, and did not consult with the mayor or the city council. The police said they were acting on existing law, not on any complaints by local business owners or anyone else. A little over a month ago when the sale of the Salvation Army building and land was finalized, that's when things changes with the food distribution, and where people were eating the food, and it was at that time that the police told the church they would no longer be able to distribute food at the park. The mayor and the city council have said they will find a solution for these problems.

MOST hunters, who know ANYTHING about the anatomy of a deer, don't take heart shots. It is VERY easy to either miss, or wound a deer by taking such a badly placed shot.

I tend to take shots just on the backside of, or even hit, the front shoulder blade, and just a bit high, not mid body. That gets me a double lung hit and, more often than not, either severs or paralyzes the spinal cord. I NEVER shoot a a deer that is moving, I DON'T take shoots over 200 yards, with the rifle, or 100 yards with the other two tools I use.

Being a good hunter and a marksman are not related skills.

I have been shooting now for 57 years, I started at age 5. I believe I know how to handle a firearm by now. I have been honing my hunting skills, for just about as long. Several years as a hunting guide for deer and grouse helped as well.

Thank you for the links but I don't need them. I am VERY heavily involved with the Michigan DNR and often hunt with several high level DNR officials, including but not limited to, the Director of the DNR, the head of the wildlife division of the DNR and several biologists and conservation officers. They were personally made aware of the situation.

You must have the part in my post where I said the venison was professionally cut, wrapped and frozen.

How do I know how much I need? Easy, it is just my wife and I at home. We KNOW how much meat we can use over the course of a year, we have after all, been married for over 40 years. I keep the amount and cuts I wish to keep and give the rest away. Not a complicated process.
