Pirating

I'm watching an interesting show on Naval surface warfare. One big problem is piracy, with almost 300 cases in 2008 alone. Why is it not policy that any pirates caught are immediately executed and dumped into the sea?

Leo, are you just tryin to stir up the libs here? LOL....anyway. it wouldn't be "Politically Correct" to dump them in the sea...pollution being what is is.......;)

Because they fall under different laws and treaties since the 16 century.

It would not just make a lot of sense to do so but with the "international" courts and the UN today, it is hard to figure out where the lines are drawn.

I'm sure a few heads may explode at the thought of summary execution but I guarantee nobody "accidentally" commits piracy on a ship so there's no danger of executing any innocents. I suspect the sharks will eliminate any pollution worries and I also suspect a few times of handling it this way and pirating will become far far less common. Me... stir things up just for the fun of exploding a few liberal heads... :D

Leo: you sound just like the sea Captain in one of Mark Twain's stories, who couldn't see the need for a trial of a man he knew to be guilty - the Captain wanted to hang him on the spot, saving everyone time & trouble. But there is a reason for due process, and bypassing it is not a good idea, ever. Though it certainly could [and should] be streamlined.

Smart sea captain and yes, the captain is the absolute law at sea. I believe in due process but I don't believe in "overdo"ing due process. Common sense should trump some things. Unfortunately two primary groups are against common sense. 1. Lawyers, who don't want common sense as it would significantly reduce their opportunities for abuse and excess and 2. Liberals, who operate from emotions and feelings and can't mentally cope with common sense.

As I said, it is impossible to "accidentally" pirate a ship so executing them on the spot is only going to eliminate pirates and huge amounts of wasted resources arresting, trying, appealing and incarcerating or executing them later.

Sry OVM, the captain is the master of his ship, nothing else. He still has to abide by laws that govern his position and that is where the problem is.

It doesn't matter what laws or rules the Pirates operate under, there are a lot of complicated issues involved and this is easier solved by getting rid of the world court and the UN and return to the countries fixing problems themselves.

Is it just because it is done on the 'high seas' that it is okay to dispatch these "bandits"?

jaminjim

Veteran Expediter
Pirates by their very nature ...are not affliated to any one country. hence fair game...

since it is international waters...If we want to appease those who think these bandits should be treated fairly with "rights" and all that warm fuzzie stuff..we could just turn them over to the Chinese or Russians to face their form of justice...

So it's because they have no allegiance to a Country that makes them 'fair game"?

So it's okay if you are doing it to send a message? Because they don't have a Country. You confuse me.

Not trying to goad you to annoy you, but to get you to expand on your thoughts. Why you seem willing to kill a few people to send a message. Is that only if on the high seas? Personally I think they should kill the whole lot of them.

"few" was relative thinking maybe wrongly...it "might" be all it takes to reconsider their actions...

There is no reason that these people should continue to draw breath. It would go a long way in stopping the next group from attempting similar activities.

Consider this, if you started removing the right hand of petty thieves, how many people do you think would need to learn to eat with their other hand?

Yeah, any time a smaller boat approaches a larger one, piracy should be assumed, and the smaller boat should just be blown out of the water. Questions can always be asked later if necessary.

Under the plan there wouldn't be anyone to question.

You don't execute any and all passengers on any and all boats just because they are smaller. You do safely presume a boat filled with rocket propelled grenades and launchers, machine guns, grappling hooks etc. is a pirate ship and you send it and it's contents to the ocean floor. Quite simple really.

Well, I'm not sure how one would go about taking inventory of an approaching boat to find out what is on board, but in any case, here's one that looks like it might possibly, maybe, might have some grenades, launchers, machine guns, and likely a grappling hook or two. Looks menacing enough to me. Fire away!!!!

Whoops, wait a minute. They're the wrong color. I wonder who they are? Or, rather, were?

Well If a ship is attacked the Captain can order to shoot to kill to defend themselves...and sink the attacking ship...

this nonsense of boarding the ship and taking away their weapons and letting them go free is just silly...

OVM, you've hit the nail on the head with this simple yet effective solution. The idea of giving due process to some barbarian caught in the act of climbing over the side of your vessel with an AK-47 is naive and dangerous. These freighters need to hire some Blackwater contractors for security. They'll be glad to kill the aggressors, feed them to the sharks and sink their boat - problem solved. Once this happens a few times these clowns will go back to mugging people on street in Mogadishu.
