Pets & Expediting & Canada?

A bit off the normal subject, but can anyone speak with experience of pets in the truck and Canadian regulations. We have a bird that we prefer not to leave behind. We were first told that would be OK as long as we had a certificate of health for Canada travel.

Our vet was told via a phone call to Canada that: 1. Birds do not need certificates to come in. 2. That if a bird were brought in and taken out, the bird could not come back in for another 90 days. (Sort of confusing since there are no regulations on coming in , in the first place)

We are about a month away from starting on the road and thought we had this settled. The bird would not be out of the cab. If anyone has any info or experience to share, I would appreciate it.

Truck owners are OK with pets, but we do not want to be barred from loads into Canada.

Best advice I can give with the pets and expediting in and out of Canada? Just don't do it. I know you love your pet, but if it comes into question over any of the border crosses, it will create a lot of delays, and you'll get enough of those as it is without the pet, and in the circumstances of expedited freight, you won't be able to afford the delays. It's just not a good idea in general for expedite.

I know there are different regulations for different kinds of animals.

Many of you remember the "Monkey People", they traveled with a monkey. They were informed by US Customs that if they tried to enter the US with a monkey, they would seize it and donate it to a lab for scientific research. The issue is not entering Canada - it is when you re-enter the US.

I'm sure that there are different regulations would differ for a dog and a bird. A dog is very easy to get back and forth across the border.

What kind of bird is it? I had a parrot for a few years.

I know this wont help with your bird, but for all out there that were wondering. For dogs, you MUST carry a valid rabies and vaccination certificate. I'm not sure what would happen if you didn't have one, but knowing them(canada), I wouldnt suggest it.

The bird is a Cockatiel, that I hand fed from two weeks old, and now 5 yrs old. It is very attached, especially to me.

Truck owners said just to be sure we carried health certificate but the answers the vet received from Canada were confusing, to say the least. The vet gave the bird a clean bill of health.

Here is a true tall tale about a pet in a truck from when I ran at FedEx.
The couple had a cat who rode with them in the truck. One day they stopped at a place to pick up a load and went inside, but left one of the windows open a little bit. Well, while they were inside Fluffy jumped out the window.
They got back in the truck and took off, but didn't realize Fluffy was gone until many miles down the road.
The load was very time critical. But when they realized Fluffy was gone, went back to look for him and blew the load, yet never did find him

I did get a reply from official in Canada. I suppose US has some strange regs also.

If I came in to Canada w/bird could stay as long as I wanted, but could not come in again for 90 days after the first entry.

If I applied for in import permit, then have the bird stay in quarantine in a Canadian home for 45 days, it sounds like I could come and go freely w/bird. ??? Of course then maybe I would have trouble getting back into us? Who knows

Raised the bird from 2 weeks old. 5 yrs old now. very tame. Puts up a fuss the minute I come in the drive at night from work, until I go get it on my shoulder for a while. It will ride w/us to Milwaukee this weekend from Ga. for grand daughters graduation. Driving up Fri night then back on Monday.

Hate to do it, but looks like we will leave the bird home w/person going to stay in our house. Will surely miss it.

Thanks for the time you all put in moderating the forum and replying to questions. You have been helpful. Wife and I are looking forward to working together. Looks like we will start in July. Know it won't be all fun, but our jobs keep our noses to the grindstone and worn out and no time for each other. Maybe we can see a little of this great country and even spend a couple days break w/our kids in Wis, Mn, & Iowa.

Birds tired and so am I. (he's asleep on my arm here at the keyboard)
