Last weekend, on layover in Indy, I took the time to do something that even the best of us can overlook - checking all my permits for expiration dates. Nothing says "incompetent" like scrabbling through the dozens of pages, under the eagle eye of a DOT officer or state trooper, looking for the one he's just asked for - especially if, when you've finally handed it to him, he hands it back, pointing out that it expired awhile ago...
You can avoid that horrible feeling, by making it a habit to check the dates, at least twice a year - write it on a calendar in your truck, if you need the reminder, like I know I do.
I circled or highlighted the expiration dates on every permit, to make it easier to find them, and only found one that was already passed, luckily. The Safety Department is very good at sending new ones, but ultimately, it's up to the driver to make sure we have what we need, as the trooper WILL remind you, if you don't have it - so let's try to not get caught off guard, ok?
