Percentage of night driving

What percentage of night driving do you do? Please specify single or team. I´m now taking some extended time off, and don´t know when or if I´ll come back to the road. Time to look at other options. During my long trucking career, I drove TT , and after those years, also expeditied in a D unit many years. The one thing I never liked about expediting, was all the night driving. It was nice once in awhile, but it got to be I was doing about half my miles after dark, and sleeping during the day. I never really got used to that, as I always liked driving,and part of the pleasure was seeing the sights as you drive along. During my TT days, I didn´t do much night driving, as it of course was more structured, but pulling the big trailer, limited my access to places I could get into and see like I did with my D unit.Just curious.

I am single in a D-Unit.

I would have to say maybe 70% during the week is at night, Now if I catch a run over the weekend I try to do it durng the day.

We're a team and we do probably 70% of our driving at night. Seems the loads pick up in the afternoon and deliver then next morning.

I drive solo, and my experience is the same as above: most loads are afternoon pickup for morning delivery.
I like night driving, most big cities, especially those on the water's edge, are very pretty at night. Good music makes the miles just melt away, it seems. And it makes the afternoon naps legitimate.;)

We split our night at two o'clock in the morning. That way we both get some daylight driving. Bob is a night owl and I like to watch the sun come up. The other nice thing about switching then is if you sit a couple days then Bob can stay up a little later and I go to bed a little later and we are good to go.

Those wanting to drive in the daylight hours need to grab a job selling Ice Cream to the kiddies.

Somewhere around 40% of my driving hours are during darkness. I only take runs that are 1/2 a night, either getting up really early or staying up a little late. If it's a pick up at night and drive all night long to deliver in the morning I usually pass on it.

While we are a team we don't always operate as a team. As well, we spend a large chunk of our time runnings roads that are relatively quiet.

We enjoy running at night. I know we definitely run more at night during the winter than in the summer. I'd estimate 70 - 75% of the time we are rolling in the dark.

If you find yourself unable to adapt to different sleep patterns and still get fully rested then you'd be wise to see if you can minimize your night driving.

We drive a D Unit. Jim does the day driving and I drive the nights - I am a night owl and I like the peace and quiet of the nights so I don't mind. Believe me, Jim doesn't mind either!:+ :+

Single driver,van, 80% all nighters.

My carrier, On-Time Express, has drivers who only drive local. they have some that will go out of town if it's close enough to drive right back. They have others who will go from Detroit to Chicago and wait for a load back. The latter can pay quite well. If you pick up a LTL or two and then wait for a expedite load, you can do quite good.

My carrier only has 4 dispatchers, so they quickly learn what kind of runs you prefer, and are willing to work with you.

Also pick up some Vision Advantage from www.drdavidwilliams.com. Helps with OPE (Old people's eyes). I have a lot better night vision since taking them.

We always augh about driving the graveyard shift. I enjoy night driving, everyone has on their headlights so it's easy to see where everyone is. I also have a fasicination with the mon and the stars, I love it.

But back to the answer you were looking for....about 70% of our loads are at night.

I have alway refered to expediting as the:

"Five o'clock OH S%#T freight"

it gets to be five o'clock and someone says

"OH S%#T we ain't gonna make it to morning"

And that is why we get the big bucks, because if they could wait until day after tomorrow they would just call JB Hunt.
