Penn State ruling

This does not affect me in the slightest. Why should I care?

After the opening statement, the question is not why should you care, but rather, why must you comment?

I don't even live in PA any longer and The Big Ten or college football in general could go away tomorrow and my life would hardly be impacted. No big deal. It is all for show, nothing more.

SO WHAT if the wins are vacated? Do the players who played in those games die? It is ONLY a GAME!

Students lose a scholarship? GEE, does that mean that they have less money for beer or drugs? GEE, they may then be able to LEARN something.

In light of the oft expressed view that one must have direct experience to 'know' a subject, how much experience do you have with being a college student?
It sounds like you have none at all.

When I quit I had almost 90 credits with a 3.2gpa. Mostly at the Univ. of MD. Where did you go to school? I quit because, at the time, I could not get any classes that fit my needs. There was, at that time, no such thing as online classes and there was just nothing left to take at the schools in Japan or England. Just how it was in those days. It different now. Some of my geology classes, through the U of MD, were taken at Leeds Poly Tech. GREAT prof but very few classes. IF they had enough classes there I would have done a major in that. As it was, there was no degree in applied spy.

Besides, fishing and hunting were more fun and far more useful. Can't eat a diploma and there was NOTHING that I learned in school, at any level, that helped me catch fish or take game.

They also did not have a rifle or skeet team so I could not get a free ride. POOR ME! LOL!

My last education in a classroom was [practical] nursing school, after which, I did about half the work towards becoming an RN through 'distance learning' [study at home, take the ACT-PEP or CLEP tests at a local college] before I did a face palm, realizing that RNs do the parts of nursing I disliked most: dealing with the docs, and charting. So I quit. ;) And no free ride here, either.
But you ignored the question about commenting on something to say it doesn't affect you & you don't care.
I'm not saying you aren't entitled to voice your opinion, but asking why you should care and then offering an opinion is rather contradictory, wouldn't you say?
O wait: I totally forgot that I went to truck driving school after I quit nursing - that was some classroom time too. And boy, do I hate classrooms - never again!

I hated school too! Shooting was more fun and more productive.

Oh yeah, I forgot. I too had truck driving school. Also about 1000 hours of firefighter training and about 250 hours of emergency medical training. Let's not forget the multiple first aid classes, but all of that stuff was useful.

Off to sleep now. Leaving on a coast to coast early in the morning.

On topic: the hero worship centered on athletes isn't just a problem at Penn State - it's evident at every college with an athletic department. And the culture is what allows a lot of wrongdoing to go uncorrected, but pretending it's just a Penn State issue is going to allow it to continue. I bet other colleges will make sure they screen for potential pedophiles from now on, and consider the problem solved.
Like a comment on the Colorado shooting: theatres will install metal detectors now. As if the theater was the problem.

The source of the problem at PSU was of course Sandusky. But the outrage was that the senior administration at Penn St knowingly allowed this pedophile to continue his criminal attacks on young boys while being employed and sanctioned on their campus - all for the sake of protecting the reputation of their football program. The senior administrators have been fired and will likely face jail time and endless civil lawsuits; personally, I think the Board of Regents should be included in the civil liability. Unfortunately, the current students are getting caught up in this mess but no one is forcing them to attend Penn State - they can transfer as can the current student athletes in football.

It's also very true that the economy of the State College community will suffer dramatically with the downfall of their football program - imagine taking the Packers away from Green Bay. But let's not forget that people in that community were aware of what Sandusky was doing: his actions were reported to the county prosecuter many years ago and nothing was done about it. Big universities in small communities (or even larger ones) wield enormous power and influence, and the powers at Penn St obviously kept silent those who might have stopped Sandusky when his homosexual attacks were first discovered. It's hard to feel sympathy for the community when it's likely that some among them knew what he was doing but kept silent, disregarding this victims of this creep for the sake of a college football team.

Just a clarification, Pilgrim: Sandusky's acts were not homosexual, but pedophilia - there's a difference. Pedophiles are sexually attracted to children. Both coaches and priests find the available children are all boys, but what matters is that they're children.
Homosexuals are not pedophiles, as a rule, any more than heterosexuals.

I don't agree with the community knowing this. The prosecutor. That's it. Joe the cobbler, or Dan the pizza maker had no clue. And the prosecutor knowing should take all blame off of the college. Once it's in the DA's court, then that's it.

Penn State will just have to do what all other businesses do....downsize abit and recover...maybe pump up other sports programs or even dare I say, scholastic programs....
The town I hope will also, next election sweep out the entire DA's office for its lack of action...

There is no more chance of something happening at ps than any other school, church or public restroom in the nation. At this point ps might be the safest

Homosexuals are not pedophiles, as a rule, any more than heterosexuals.

The statement that homosexuals are not more likely to be pedophiles than heterosexuals doesn't appear to be accurate. I believe homosexuals disproportionatly are more likely to be pedophiles than heterosexuals. Apparently they are 10 to 20 times more likely to molest children.

If i had a young one i would have no problem letting them loose in a ps room than i would any other. What does ones political leaning have to do with this thread?

Child?...Really?.....a 6 foot 5, 250 lb lineman is a child?....
we are talking intelligent young men here, not 7 - 10 year olds....the power of reasoning and thought....
there is no pedophilia here....these were not kids....pure sexual assault
