Paying for pavement

Henry Albert has written a series of blogs on the history of paying for highways. How are we going to pay going forward? Tolls or increase IFTA?

I found the series thought provoking and educational. It is not a secret that our bridges and roads are deteriorating.

the three governors have an idea. google, three governors and paying for roads !!!
if we could only get them directed on using the funds we already have for roads/bridges instead of all the misappropriation we are currently see we might get somewhere.

dont get me wrong, i cant say im a fan. i pay enough already. but, they might be a good lead to righting the wrong.

How much do road taxes cost over the life of the truck?

couldnt tell you, but with the number of trucks i would think it would be a good start. with all the other funds that are suppose to be for road that are all misappropriated, they could take care of quite a bit. the simple fact is they need to use the funds for what they are meant for.

From what Henry found in his research the road taxes are not enough to pay for the roads. The trucks are getting to good of fuel mileage and the increase on how much it costs to build a road or bridge.

On of his figures I found interesting was the FET on new trucks and how much that equals out to over the life span of the truck. He has some pretty interesting facts in the blog.

i agree that road tax itself would not be enough and probably still not enough if the fet was added in. but, you have to look at what % of these they take away for non road related projects. they take a % of all the other funds allocated to roads/bridges for non related projects. the biggest offender being public transportation projects. next is the funds the dot gives the states free range to use however they please and most of those are not road related either. the system of paying for roads needs revamped. all and i mean all moneys paid into and allocated for roads/bridges should be used for that purpose only.
