Depending on your agreement with the owner I would say you should be able to net $600 in one week. Lots of variable factors, the company that the truck is leased to,the area you live in all play a role.

Buffalo is a decent area,be prepared to go to Canada,a good deal of freight from Canada comes through Buffalo enroute to Ohio etc.

Lots of variables come into play however it's some simple arithmetic for a general answer. The most common split is 60/40 with the side buying fuel getting 60% plus all of the fsc money. If you are with a carrier that pays per mile the most common seems to be 77cpm. Multiplying by 60% gives 46cpm. Dividing $600 by .46cpm gives 1304 miles needed to gross $600. If you are asking about putting $600 per week into your pocket it becomes far more difficult to predict. What will your fuel costs be? What will your d/h mileage be? Those will have a significant impact on a net figure and can't be easily forecast. Perhaps some of our van operators will give you an idea of what % of loaded miles they run d/h as well as further input on calculating a net figure.

thanks for the info. i would also bring my generator and my 1500 watt space heater with me to save fuel, from what i've been reading fuel will be my biggest expense.

Rich , you did note that he said " working for an o/o" probably a fleet owner in a cargo van . Can he really net $600 a week getting 60% and paying fuel and other expenses ?

1] I'll be more specific by saying that i would like to take home the mimimum $350.00 to $400.00 a week would that be possible working for an o/o in a B-unit? I would be driving solo.

2] Is it also true that as a solo driver i would be driving mostly east of the mississppi?

3] Is there more night driving than day?

4] I was told 3 to 4 loads per week, is that about average?

Yes you should have no problem, if you do then there are a lot of reasons for it. Do research about which company you lease to, DO NOT SIGN WITHOUT RESEARCHING ALL THE COMPANIES. Go to one or several truck stops and ask the expediters how they are treated. VERY IMPORTANT.

Yes, it isn't all that bad actually.
>
>3] Is there more night driving than day?

No, I may drive 12% at night, most of the time between 5PM (its winter gets dark early) to 10PM. I did drive all night just before Christmas, unusual. When it is dark, I usually in the bunk sleeping or reading (or freezing).

Yes, but this depends on the company and many other factors; i.e. location of your van, customer base for the area.

So after I pay for food, fuel, laundry and deduct uncle sams portion and everything else I would need to do over the road, I could bring home a minimum $350.00 a week driving 60/40 split for an o/o?

You definately could but a lot is up to you . Have you talked with any fleet owners yet ? Why not talk to some with several trucks and ask what their drivers are taking home . It's definately in the fleet owner's best interest to help you make the max when they have to make truck payments and pay taxes and insurance and more with 40%

$400 a week at 40 hours a week amounts to $10/hour before taxes in an hourly employee job. $12 to $15 per hour as an employee would give you the take-home money you seek. When you consider the exenses and uncertainties of expediting, along with the time away from home and the hours required, would not a "real job" be better to achieve your income goals?

thanks for the response ATEAM, home time is not an issue for me at this point in my life and working with a boss breathin down your neck is why i'm thinking of going otr. however i do agree with you that an hourly local job would be better even though i know i could get something here locally for about $9.00 an hour but again it would with someone breathin down your neck.

I responded as I did because you stated only your financial goal. With your lifestyle goal also stated, it may make sense for you to take up life on the road. Keep on researching. Expediting has its own set of negatives that you should know about and be prepared for before you jump in. Note that when you have a load on your truck (van) you are fully responsible for its safe and timely delivery. No boss as such, but the expectation to perform successfully with every load is part of expediting.

One thing to consider is that there will be weeks when you net more than $400.00.without too much effort. Working for the man would probably require overtime and boss problems.

I have a question for the Poster. You can acutally survive on $400.00 a week? Have you ever considered how your going to live when you say oh after your 68th Birthday?

What about Health Insurance do you have any from a wife or another source X-employment I hope so.

Seems like a very low $ to survive on let alone save for the future.

Greg you forgot to include luck and knowledge so you are in the right place at the right time. This past January I spoke with a fedex cc driver in a van who was going broke for lack of loads and he wasn't the only fedex driver in the same situation. I have not done well in this busness despite keeping myself on call most of the year and only turning done loads for economic reasons like drive a 100 miles to go 100
loaded into a questionable area. Wish we could all be as fortunate as you or have your experience.

yes i can survive on $400 a week if thats what i'm left with after uncle sam and all the otr expenses are taken out first and 400 is what i'm left with, should'nt be a problem at all. so i figure, working for an o/o in a cargo van solo i would have to gross $600 or more.

Way more than $600. $400.00 a week is just barley above POVERTY LEVEL. Hope you set your goals higher than that, if you walked into my company with that goal I am confident you would be shown the door. Not nearly goal minded enough or hungry set your sites looking at the sky not your shoe strings.

thanks for the response broompilot, a recent conversation with a fleet owner with nations express told me there drivers were averaging $400 to $600 a week. That did seem kind of low to me and i'm sure i could make better money at fedex, panther or con-way. thanks for the info its good to know that i could make a lot more than i was told. also what is detention pay?
