The price of gas, workers comp. insurance and all the other cost of running a business are going up, not just in the expedite business, but in all business avenues.
It is becoming more expensive to drill for oil because of rising cost associated with research, development and refining. It has become more expensive to provide insurance coverage to working people because of the rising cost associated with the payment of claims and the cost risk of continuing such coverage.
The list goes on and on - but in simple form that is it. The problem we have in this business is we are independent contractors - yet, we do not set our own prices, the company we provide the services to sets the price they will pay us.
While that seems backwards many may feel it is an even exchange for the income potential we all could reach along with the independence we can enjoy for basically working for ourselves while being provided a solid customer base.
The companies we work for figure in their cost as well and pass that on to those customers we service, yet, our companies do not have to worry about the labor cost of their drivers since they are independent contractors.
Independent contractors have a tough road whenever it comes to trying to get their companies to increase their rate. But, one way to notice an increase is to fight for everything that is due to you and when given the chance to claw out more FSC, deadhead dollars, and overall dollars. I have found when you turn down a load and they call you right back - you are now in the command seat.
You have to know when the right time is to play hardball, but, when you get in the right situation it is nice to win the game.
But, basically, I believe till the expediting companies see a massive exit, and I do mean massive exit of drivers and o/o there will be little improvement in the overall RPM.

since we are all independent contractors why don't we all just agree to take our vacations at the SAME time, say the first week of july, that should get someones attention

Truthfully, the company is there to make money and not to give increases. They operate in their best interest and know that if you don't want to run at 70 CPM, someone will.

The reason I like the precentage over the flat rate is I know I am part of the profit formula, not just an expense.

I would not recommend the first week of July for you folks to do a sit in. That is always a slow period in this business. If you want to have an impact you must all take vacation during the busy season.

Also keep in mind you need everyone to do this in order to have an impact and you can't get drivers to agree on directions much less to sit out a week.

If it were that easy we would shut the Country down each time we wanted to make a point and we as drivers just will not do it.

Good luck though. One problem you have is there is a long line of people waiting to do what we all do and all companies know this. Bottom line is we are just trucks and if we don't move someone else does.

Come on and jump in Newbees, if you like not making $, if you enjoy lots and lots of reading, looking at your truck and many others come and go around you than join the inflation busters.

I just posted under the question of Health Insurance regarding inflation. There is such a flood of us in this market now, and trucks are not being retired like they use to be that this industry is right now at a Break Even Point for most of us the rest will follow.

If after the last four weeks if I had a truck note still, I would be seriously hurting. This business has dropped so much in the last three months that anyone considering this and reading this and still considering it should have there head examined.

Now this is just started, I hope it will turn back around. But with all time high houses being foreclosed on, people ignororing all signs of commonsense in borrowing it is now time to pay the piper. Those who are debt free will be able to ride this out, if you have payments, house, car, some credit cards, and a hefty truck payment I do not know how your gona make it.

I am not enjoying writing this at all, and if it appears I am bragging that is far from it either. I am quite distrubed by factors around us that I see are affecting us all, but what am I or we to do about it? I wish us all well, truley I do.

When you all, myself included, agreed to the contract we signed,we agreed to do the work for compensation for that load.If now that you feel your pay isnt enough, then it's time to look for a company that will pay you more, mass vacation will do anything but cause that company to put on more trucks, then where will we be?
Yes as far as the pay,in 1984 @ Roberts Express(Fedex Custom Critical),our pay made many changes, with two different percentages, and in the beginning you could work with the dispatch as of pay on a load, but bottom line was,as a tractor, most of us would just need 1.00/mile for all miles.
The cost of doing business has increased, from price of co-drivers,to tires, and of course fuel, even our accountants costs more. There are those that think they can run for that buck a mile, they are just kidding themselves.Bottom line, after expenses, all my expenses,my driver pay came down to $.61/mile,and that was speedometer miles.Guess I must be doing something right, and Broom I have a big truck payment

It really is simple. Just don't take unprofitable runs. We have been talking to companies about increasing our compensation for years.
Then take loads that don't pay well just to keep moving. Nothing will change until we do.

If the offered load does not compensate you enough, don't take it.

folks the July remark was kinda a joke, as someone said the drivers just won't get together to make changes, the company's know this and so they keep on making record profits quarter after quarter, everyone associated with trucking use us as their ride to riches, truck dealers, truck stops, insurance agents, the states, restaurants, anything assosiated with trucking, they realize we MUST have their goods and services and inflate the price accordingly, ex. windshield wiper switch $285.00 plus labor, and is there any mechanic around that is worth any way near $100.00 or $150.00 bucks an hour. Ever notice Mcdonalds restaurants, in a truck stop their value menu is a lot leaner, went to one in Ohio $1.50 for a double cheese two blocks down the street it is only a buck. Once in ten years I have seen a chance for ,there was a large group coming together calling for a three day shutdown, not enough to hurt the country but enough to let everyone know what is happening, sadly it fell apart because of the hurricanes in Florida that year and I haven't seen anything close to it try to form since. Sad but true if you are a driver you will be making what you are now or maybe a bit less ten years from now as we are making a bit less than we were ten years ago, if you want a pay raise the even stays up with inflation you better look for a different line of work.
