When we had drivers (several years ago), the driver got whatever he could get loaded onto his com card. That was about 1/2 of what the truck got. The driver paid the fuel. The driver got the fuel surcharges (whenever we got them). We paid for repairs to the vehicle. The exception was if the driver intentionally created a problem. We actually had a driver (not for long) that spent his sitting time taking apart the vehicle. The driver had to pay for his own meals, showers, and other expenses.
The driver only made money when he was loaded, same as the owners that run their own vehicles. We figured it gave the driver incentive to work.
It wasn't worth it to us to have a driver in our vehicle. He didn't make as much as he wanted, and we didn't either.
Stay safe out there!
