It is sad to hear of drivers getting the bad end of a situation with owners, but it is really bad when owners get the bad end. For them there is always a greater cash loss, than for a driver, due to equiptment downtime, hiring and training new people, ect.
Each company that leases on trucks should:
1. Do a thorough background check on all owners, and their drivers.
2. Do a financial background check on owners to see if they are financially sound.
3. Have a shop they are contracted to, inspect all equiptment before leasing it on. My truck was given the ok by a shop the owner had to check out his trucks, but the trk had no rt turn signals, brakes needed adjustment, radiator leaked, and the steering was out of adjustment.
4. Contracts should state what both sides are responsible for, contracts should be approved by carrier, and signed by all concerned, and a copy to all parties.
5. Equiptment should be photographed by owner and carrier, and when it is returned by driver, it should be inspected before driver leaves, driver then signs off, a copy sent to owner, if everything is okay, driver get's paid for work performed.
Good owners, and good drivers need to be protected from bad owners, and bad drivers, America depends on us for safe, on time deliveries of it consumable goods.
I agree with you, good owners and good drivers need to have a way to find one another, so we can all truck, make money, and take care of our families.
