Pay for delay time

One of our "b" units was to deliver to a plant that closed a midnite but the shipper had made arrangements for someone to stay until our truck arrived. The truck was there at 12.30am but the plant was closed and didn't reopen until 5.00am we are charging 4.5 hours detention time at $20.00 per hour. Is this a reasonable rate if not what does your co. charge. our policy has been all delay pay goes to the truck not just the 75% of billed amount. Any replies will help as I want to be fair to the o/o and the shipper.

First of all you have to find out if there is a Window for delivery, example: lets say you have a delivery time of the 12:30, How many hours does the receiver have to unload you, most of the places I have delivered to there is a 2-4 hour window. which means that your detention time will only be the difference between the window and the actual time you delivered.
so you better check this out more carefully before you bill for the time spent. If your actual delivery time wasn't until 5:00am then you have no detention time coming to you. Main thing is i WOULDNT BELIEVE ANYTHING THE SHIPPER TELLS YOU, ESPECIALLY THAT IF THE RECEIVER CLOSES AT MIDNIGHT, AND AN ARRANGEMENT HAS BEEN MADE WITH THE RECEIVER TO WAIT FOR YOU TO ARRIVE AFTER HOURS. I WOULD OF DEFINITELY CALLED THE RECIEVER TO VERIFY THAT THEY WOULDBE THERE. iF YOU DIDNT CALL THE RECIEVER IT IS YOUR LOSS.

aLSO IF YOU DID NOT GET VERIFICATION FROM YOUR DISPATCHER,OR A AUTHORIZATION #, FROM THE COMPANY YOU WORK FOR THEN ALSO YOU WILL NOT BE PAID

My question is not if we are due delay time but what is the normal charge per hour for a "b" van. We work with a select group of shippers and very seldom have have to wait to load or unload. we charge a higher rate to deliver to auto plants with a rep for poor management of their receiving area. You might see us as a backward co. as we discount non-automotive freight that is fast load, fast unload, and the invoice is paid in less than 30 days.
