Here's another way the government is looking to get money out of our pockets. Just another expense for truckers as well.

A Push for No Passports at the Border

In 2007 anyone crossing the U.S.-Canadian border will be required to show a passport to cross. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) met with local mayors to discuss alternatives to this plan.
Schumer says that the law will keep business out of New York. He stated that people will be less likely to travel in for work or for tourism reasons because they would be required to carry or obtain a passport.

They are looking at some alternatives, and it's important to balance convenience and security at our northern border. One of those possible alternatives would be a Border Crossing Card. It would be a card that people could apply for and use in place of a passport. That solution is one that is used on the U.S. southern border.
Schumer and other leaders have until 2007 to come up and pass a new measure.

I have my passport. It cost me $60 and is good for 10 years. Our good friend Chump Schumer will 'take care of us' by working out something that doesn't require a passport. Instead it will be a special card for 'only' $20 a year and it won't be good anywhere except the Canadian border. I'll stick with the passport.

You should have a passport anyway, just go get one and then when you might want to go elsewhere you whip out your passport...it makes a very good impression. its not like a flu shot..doesnt hurt..no side effects. Just wait sometime until you see that DOT mans face when he says..let me see your license and you whip out the passport too...he'll say dang! I've never been out of Macon County.

$60 for 10 years seems very reasonable. Was'nt there talk of a FAST card being used in lieu of the passport? And, is there actually anyone who cares what Shumer has to say?

I read an article in the Toronto Sun this week that said the President is sounding like he isn't real crazy about the idea. It also said that it would be a passport or "other secure document". Maybe a FAST card?

Gentlemen: This is not for Canada; it will be required for everyone to enter the USA.
American citizens will be required to identify themselves on re-entry.
The passport or another approved document - which hasn't been decided on yet will be required to enter your country.

This will in effect keep US citizens in the USA unless they have a passport to re-enter.
No going across the border for a few hours in Canada; or Mexico for that matter.
No more Canadians just popping over the border for a few hours to shop or go to a Sabres or Bills game; unless they have a passport.
This will devastate the economy of Niagara Falls Ontario and New York.

So much for the LONGEST UNFORTIFIED BORDER between our two countries.
The Iron Curtain came down; now the American Curtain is going up around the USA.

Don't you feel safer already?
It's all in the name of HOMELAND SECURITY.

When I was given my FAST card last week, I was also given a booklet that states:
"The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all travelers to & from the Americas, the Caribbean, And Bermuda to have passports or other accepted form of documentation to enter or reenter the United States. The program will be rolled out in phases. The proposed timeline is as follows:
12/31/05 Requirement applied to all travel (air/sea) to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central America, and South America.

12/31/06 Requirement applied to allair & sea travel to & from Mexico & Canada.

12/31/07 Requirement extended to all air, sea, and land border crossings.

It goes on to say that "Generally, Canadian Nationals must show ID but are exempt from passport and visa requirements. However, a Canadian passport, birth certificate, Naturialization certificate, or other supporting document will facilitate the inspection, and is strongly encouraged."

As was mentioned before, its a "proposed program" & could be changed, it doesn't require Canadian citizens to have a passport, and if it is implemented without changes, Americans will need a passport as of 01/01/2008.
I was planning to get a passport anyhow - my birth certificate is too old & fragile to keep pulling it out at the border, lol.:D

New Requirements for Travelers

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.

In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:

December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.
