In 2007 anyone crossing the U.S.-Canadian border will be required to show a passport to cross. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) met with local mayors to discuss alternatives to this plan.
Schumer says that the law will keep business out of New York. He stated that people will be less likely to travel in for work or for tourism reasons because they would be required to carry or obtain a passport.
They are looking at some alternatives, and it's important to balance convenience and security at our northern border. One of those possible alternatives would be a Border Crossing Card. It would be a card that people could apply for and use in place of a passport. That solution is one that is used on the U.S. southern border.
Schumer and other leaders have until 2007 to come up and pass a new measure.
