Yes this is true, I listened to a radio show in Seattle that explained the reasons. So even on top of your Fast Card were going to need Pass Ports to enter into Canada and back to the States. I believe they are shooting for 2007.

The latest I read was that the FAST card would be sufficient.
A passport is only one document that will be acceptable.
This story gets huge play in Canada, as we traditionally liked to pop over the border for an afternoon. We would just show our driver's licenses or birth certificates.
Now, the longest undefended border is no longer.
The USA is trying to fill the moat and raise the drawbridge.
Many experts think it will do nothing to enhance US security.
Time will tell.

This is from another truck site.

Beginning in 2008, U.S. citizens will be required to show their passports when returning from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, but truckers who regularly cross the border will be able to show their Free and Secure Trade cards instead.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative goes into effect Jan. 1, 2008. It is supposed to prevent potential terrorists from crossing into the country through other North American countries.

“Our goal is to strengthen border security and expedite entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors,” said Randy Beardsworth, an acting undersecretary in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

U.S. citizens are now required to show only their driver's licenses to re-enter from Mexico and Canada. Some border crossing officials have begun asking for additional documents since Sept. 11, 2001. It is estimated that only 20 percent of Americans have a passport.

The FAST card would be an acceptable passport substitute for “commercial truck drivers at both the northern and southern borders,” said Elaine Dezenski, an acting assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security.

“With the FAST program, we have specific requirements, including background checks, documentation requirements and biometric requirements,” Dezenski said.

The FAST program as originally announced by U.S. Customs was voluntary, a way for drivers, fleets, importers and border manufacturers to earn expedited “low-risk” border clearance – even in times of heightened security alerts – by submitting a one-time-only application, including a security profile.

The latest announcement, however, means either a FAST card or a passport soon will be mandatory for the return trip of any cross-border haul.

So why do we go? Extra pay? Lets see Panther pays what $20.00 FECC I cannot not remember, my carrier 0 so what is it the beauty of the great white North?

My last adventure to Cananda, Alberta I was held up almost 20 hours for a stupid Pars sticker. Then the nice sweet boys on the US wanted and demanded to know why my plate was not on the front bumper. Take it up with North Carolina was my only response they told me it goes on the rear for straight trucks. Not accordidng to Customs who by the way really makes all of the US DOT Transportaion Laws as they think it should be.

So there I am stuck in the middle, go ahead search my truck. The drugs I threw them out in XYZ. You would think I actually said that they went through everything but the cab and sleeper. I really wanted to show off that Bentz sleeper but they were not intrested.

Back to my original point there is no way I am driving downtown Manhatten or for less than 600 miles or into Cananda. Its not worth it. So why would you sit at Detroit for 4 hours to only be told go to XYZC to be held up another 2 or more hours?

It makes no economic sense to do either. These carriers have no respect for your time or life when it comes to Crossing the border. If we would ALL stop than something could happen until then you will be forced to pay out another $98 for a Pass port (reimbursement I ask?) I dont think so. So WHY this is the one thing I cannot figure out about this business no one cares about your time.

I keep saying there are lots of Canadian drivers cooling their heels in the USA who would love to get those runs you find so objectionable.
Our drivers can load into the USA and then load back to Canada.
Or they can deadhead back.......
I thought the necessity of having PARS stickers had been well covered in the Canada Forum.

As too why the Carriers don't respect your time?
They are not paying for your time.
They are paying for your truck and the ability of your truck to move the freight.
Your time is what you are donating.
