I will be arriving in Akron on Sun. 30th I am trying to find a ride from Akron to Seville. Cab cost about $60 seems a lot for 20-25 mile ride. If anyone else is attending and Arriving Sun could share costs.

Tonyg,
November only has 30 days, so if your waiting to be picked up on the 31st it may be a long wait.:D

I just find it amazing that with the way the economy is right now and as slow as freight is, twice as many trucks as average loads on all boards if not more, that Panther is still putting on more trucks and that more people are still coming into this business at this time. Panther offering more loads at a reduced rate. All I can say is the best of luck to you and your family. Sorry to sound so negitive, but thats the reality.

Fr8 Shaker, I agree with you. I haven't had a Panther load in 3 weeks. I haven't even been offered a load at my regular rate or at a reduced rate. It is simply ludicrous that they are still having orientation. It is even more ludicrous to think that you will make money in this economic slowdown. Expediting for the most part has been built on the automotive business. The Big 3 are doing their best to go out of business.

So. let's see. If your biggest customer is no longer providing you with business, why would you want to add to your fleet? I guess old habits die hard. I can imagine those three days of orientation must be pretty interesting right now. So a newbie asks, "How much can I make in this business?" That's got to be riproaring funny when you get the answer.

I think you will find that most drivers at orientation are for fleet owners. There are some from other carriers but I don't see a bunch of people arriving with new trucks.
I do agree that there are currently too many trucks for the amount of available freight. I believe that is a current issue at about every carrier.
If you haven't had a load in three weeks I believe there is more to the story. Like you are doing other freight and your truck is tied up (unavailable) or you are sitting in Miami and will only do a load to the Keys. There certainly is some information left out of your post. The longest we have had a truck sit through November has been only a couple of days except for trucks now home for the holidays.

Dave, As far as there being more to the story that isn't necessarily so. I sat at home (I can't recall the exact dates) but somewhere around the end of oct. into nov. available 100% of the time and didn't receive 1 offer or even a phone call for 15 days and all this time I was first out. I watched the boards within 200 miles of my house and nothing seemed to be moving at all, so I couldn't see deadheading from my house where I was comfortable just to sit in a parking somewhere else. I called panther a few times and got the standard answer.... soon as we get something we'll let you know.

As far as panther having orientation for replacing drivers for fleet owners I can understand that as I know fleet owners need to have their trucks moving to cover expenses. but on the other hand there isn't enough work for those drivers to make a living /livable wage because if there was I doubt there would be a need to replace drivers especially as often. And with the way things are right now, someone is going to lose, the driver, the owner, but my guess probably both. I have been saying for a couple of years now that this market is over saturated and freight has been less. But some people think for some reason it will be different for them and their the exception. Only 1 person in the last year did I say was suitable for trying this and that was Chef Dennis, because he didn't need the money. Anyone else, now is not the time. It isn't that I just don't want to see more trucks out here which everyone knows we don't need, but I really don't want to see more people lose more of what they don't really have to lose. I'm sorry I don't have an answer for those people, all I know is expediting right now isn't it.

Sincerly,
Fr8 Shaker

I still think something is missing. I can't remember a time we were anywhere near NYC that we didn't get a load. Some are certainly losers, but never any period without a offer. You could have backhauled out of there for a good rate if you even wanted to do that. But, I want to keep a open mind on that because I don't know what vehicle your running. Could be harder in a van in that area? If it is a straight or tractor, there has to be something we are doing different.
As a last resort, you could just wait on a UPS load out of Jamaica.

The ugly face of Expediting is Playing along Here,
it is cost effective for large Expediting Company's to have way more trucks then freight - once they have availblle truck in the freight origin ,they keep more of the Pay.
the driver is not the costumer , the Shipper is.
it cost them close to nothing to have a truck sit.
they spend close to nothing on Driver retention,
and spend Millions on Advertising , driver recruit and orientation,

Problem is , that now we see Fleet owners playing along ,they recruit more Team drivers ,knowing that there is just not enough money to split in 3 .knowing very well that dose drivers will not last , hoping they will out drive the truck payments.
for a F/O , it is cost effective to have drivers turnover, over getting a hit on the truck.

this week i have spoke with 3 new (less then 5 weeks) teams that drive Fleet trucks , 2 of them need to spread the income for 2 house holds...
no way they can make it.
last week i have received a Panther Email , letting me know that they now recruiting Teams only .and they have opening for Fleet trucks and O/O alike.
knowing very well , that unless i am splitting the income on the same household , and/or very qualified drivers and truck ,i will not last.

spread the word , this is not the time to get into expedite.

Moose.

Same to you on the Turkey Day.

"van in Flint, MI"

That certainly tells the whole story.
