Hi guys, Im new to expediting (4months) but I guess my question is, will this have the same effect that happened in the big truck segment when JB got all his trucks and expanded and then drove freight rates down, just curious what the people with experience in expediting are thinking?

The Pumpkin referes to Schneider trucks which are painted orange. The orage traffic cones or barrels at construction sites are refered to as schneider or pumpkin eggs

Turtle,
Nice looking Sprinter. The new signage looks great. Good thing you took photos. I noticed they didn't give you new door signs with the new d.o.t. numbers. Was there a reason for that.

Thanks terryandrene, I was thinking schneider but wasn't sure since they aren't expediters per say.
It does sound kinda strange that conway would change their colors then sell. I'm wondering if Panther is going to change our logos since they have altered the name somewhat. i.e. Panther II Transportation to Panther Expedited Services.

They won't be as good looking as the new ConWay logos either way. The saying less is more has validity at times.

Yeah, the DOT door signage wasn't due to be in for a couple or three months, and then everyone else's lettering was to have been in by then, as well.

They put the new ones on mine simply because they had an extra prototype. They put one set on a straight truck a few weeks ago, and still had this set left. The ones they were going to use on the rest of the vans was to have had much smaller striping, like 6 inches, but the larger one looked good on the Sprinter, so they went ahead and put the new stuff on. It's all Moot now, tho. hehe

I really have to wonder if anyone at the NOW office knew anything about the Panther buyout. I was there all day on Wednesday, and things were done, and said, that, even in retrospect, didn't give a clue as to a buyout. Even Potter :* was asking Maintenance Mike :+ numerous and detailed questions about the lettering, time to install the new single-letters versus the old panel style, etc., that simply wouldn't have been asked if she knew none of it was going to matter in 3 days. :D

I've been with Con-Way a little over 9 years. It is the only expedite company I have worked for. I don't know much about Panther, other than what I read here. Is Panther connected to the Panther group from California? The one started by Huey "Fig" Newton, Bobby "Safety" Seale and Eldridge "Beaver" Clever. If so are drivers required to wear those tight fitting pants? They look rather uncomfortable for the long haul. I think the black glove salute thingy is really cool though man!

I'v e been with Con-Way for a year. Only expedite company I've been with, too. :)

The only thing about Panther that gives me pause is that they (a) have company trucks and (b) have dispatcher-owned trucks. I'm just wondering that, if I were a dispatcher, and I had a choice of two trucks to give a load to, one truck that I owned and one that I didn't own, which one is likely to get the first load, or worse, the better load.

On my way to my Davenport layover this morning, after I got the QC message, I stopped off and got me a new pair of black driving gloves. Best to be prepared. Or, beep repaired, in any case.

As everyone is so cheerful about this, I am wondering about if this is a market share grab/eliminate the competition move(i.e. Pfizer business stratigy at work) or a true expansion.

I see that there maybe growing pains in the future for PII and the some will not be happy with the changes made to align these two companies together - meaning that you will now have a lot more internal compeition for loads.

Didn't Panther I become Panther II due to numerous pending fines from the D.O.T. for log violations, accidents, etc? Didn't they just do the old name change two-step to avoid litigation? Why would you want to be Panther II if you were Panther I?

Are not they already paying B Unit O/O's less than the industry standard?

I used to like watching a tv show called "Dinosaurs", which was pretty satirical - one of the themes of the show was that all the corporations in America had merged themselves into just one, named "Wesayso". Which is getting to be less farfetched every week...
Beyond that, I am hoping it will be a good move, & I'm encouraged by the number of drivers who seem to be happy with Panther.

Just a couple of things of clarity. Panther(by itself) or Panther1 are not related to PantherII. They used the latter because there was two owners. They now are owned by Fenway Partners. Panther did not go through a name change for litigation purposes. They are now actually just Panther Expedited Services as the second owner sold his half.
At one time there was a few dispatchers and office personell
that owned trucks. That ended when Fenway took over.
Company is still ran by Dan Sokolowski.

Turtle,
Good idea buying the gloves. Did you find any of those tight crotch Eldridge Clever pants in Davenport? How about Peoria?

Been with both companies. Had a little trouble with Panther back when they where loading the fleet with too many vans when with conway had a good relationship with them.
I was just a driver then now I have my own van on with Panther and the company has came a long way.
the only sad thing about all this is that Conway has some really nice people up there in Michagan and I hope that Panther can find a place for them in Selville.
As far as this story about Panther being all these other names is far from the truth, that story was started by a couple of old drivers that could not make it with Panther. The first name change has just happened from PantherII Transportation INC to Panther Experdited Services, INC

AS FAR AS THE DISPATCHERS OWNING TRUCKS...I DO BELIEVE THAT THAT WAS ELIMINATED. THEY WERE GIVEN A CHOICE TO STAY IN THE COMPANY AND GET RID OF THE TRUCKS OR RESIGN. THAT'S WHY THE TOP DOG FLEET OWNER NO LONGER WORKS INSIDE PANTHER. CONFLICT OF INTEREST. THIS IS WHAT I WAS TOLD ANYWAY.

WAS ALSO TOLD THIS MORNING THAT THIS WAS A REAL BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR PANTHER. WE HAVE THE CUSTOMERS THAT CONWAY NOW HAD FROM THE FAR SOUTH AND THE WESTERN STATES. SO, HOPEFULLY WHEN WE GET OUT WEST WE CAN GET BACK WITHOUT THE LONG DH MILES. WE'LL SEE.

Your information is correct. It will be a interesting test as we have a truck arriving late Monday in Barstow. As with any load out there, 12-24 hours or I find the load myself.
Over the last year, Panther has been good with quick turn arounds out of LA.
