just a heads up there is a guy that works along the north end of I 65 in Kentucky at the rest park and truck stops. His mother has died, his wife in an accident, he claims to be a truck driver. He forgot that he had hit us up the week before with the same story. He wants your money.

Thanx for the tip; there's no shortage of these dirtballs at rest areas and truckstops plying on the sympathies of good hearted drivers. We were similarly approached by the same man, two weeks apart, at the old Mayflower T/S in Milford, CT. He needed a fan belt for his Camper that was stranded on I-95.

One we recently got a kick out of was on an exit ramp near the Jubitz truck stop in Portland. His sign said, "Hungry Vet." When he saw our truck approach, he was not quite quick enough to fool us. He flipped his sign to the other side that read, "Ex Trucker Needs Help."

Some of these guys know more about marketing than they realize.

I saw this one with my own eyes...

This summer, the family and I were on our way to see a Cincinnati Reds home game, as usual, the homeless lined up for 6 city blocks to hit up all the suburbanites coming in for the game.

Every calamity was represented, Katrina, Vietnam Vet, Jobless, Broken Down Car, Mother passed away in Arkansas, Homeless, God Bless you for your kindness.

My favorite one was...

"I just want a Beer".

He was the only guy on the block getting cash.

A few years back one of the radio sations in Pittsburgh, had a couple of people on there staff go out and see how many people did give by acting out panhandlers.

Another worker from the sation would try and give the money back and tell them what was going on, but most of the people won't take the money back.

One of the fake panhandlers came in at the end of the day with over $2500.00

They gave the money to the Salvation Army by the way.

There are two schools that will teach how to legally panhandle, one in NY and the other in Tallcal's area SF. The one in NY was on 60 minutes a while ago and some of those guys make good money and of course are not taxed a dime.

Last week I was fueling up and here comes a trucker, nicely dressed I might add, looking for a handout. He gave me this excuse that his check didn't arrive in time before he left and all that c**p and needed $100 to get fuel. He went on to say he had been asking all the other truckers around and many told him to GTH. I asked him if he knew what year my van was and told him if I had a $100 to give to someone who is driving a truck, I wouldn't have to be on the road with a 7 year old van - go away. I don't think he got far with anyone and really hope he didn't a dime - he was no charity case because he did get into a nice looking rather new Volvo by the way.

When a panhandler approaches, watch their faces when you ask them for money first.:7

There's a husband and wife team that works the TA on I24 just south of Nashville TN. I forget the Exit no. Got CRS disease all of a sudden. They claim they're from Rockford IL or Beloit. They've been visiting relatives in Georgia and are stranded and the wife is sick. So far they've approached me there three times in the past year.

Lawrence, I would even have to buy the guy a beer for nothing else other than HONESTY....

Beware in Olive Branch, MS this guy hit me up last January. I was on the phone with Terry when he asked me for some $, I responded come back in a half an hour I am busy right now.

Showed up this summer, "Better Late Than Never" Wearing the same FECC hat, with the same Ol "I am a broke Expediter, can you give a couple of dollars to buy me and wife dinner". I reminded him I bought you dinner back in January. He had a very intresting look on his face after my comment.

Just be cautious in Olive Branch, words out were a bunch of softies.

I used to give a buck or two pretty regularly. Sorry... I'm tapped out. I'm tired of hearing "we ran out of gas" sob stories. If you're that stupid to drive without enough gas or money to make it from A to B, you get what you deserve!

Watch out for a guy trying to get you out of your truck by telling you a driver just won a huge scratch-off, or they have cameras back there. It's usually a bunch of guys trying to get you to play 3 card monty. But these days, you never know what they'll do. Don't leave your truck for anything crazy like that.

so i go into the sleeper started going through some of the microwaved stuff that i either didnt like or had 2 or more of gave him a whole shopping plastic bag full of food and the look on his face was a mixture of happiness and shock he told me thank you so much and he didnt expect to get as much as i gave him plus i gave him some bottled water and some of my coke
i felt so good about that was having one of them days at a layover waiting to get a load on wheter or not i should be doing this and i felt there was a reason from us to have been there and i felt great

then was in alabama a few months ago stopped to switch at a truck stop well my co driver was in back getting ready for bed and i was at the wheel doing my log when some guy came up and said he had broken down a few miles back had to leave his wife and 2 year old in the car to get gas and every truck he went up to he was told to get away and i guess the n word was used so i gave him either 5-10 my co driver gave him money and this guy broke down in tears and thanked us so much
so not sure if it was true or not but the way he acted i hope he didnt use it for drugs or booze
there are some people out there who do need it but u can never be to sure who they are so generally if someone asks for money i will tell them i wont give them any but if its food they want i would offer to give them some of mine or take them in and buy them dinner

stay safe out there and rememeber to help others not only fellow drivers but anybody who might need it u never know what good it would do

want to thank my co-driver for making me understand the meaning of helping someone out

I can understand that warm & fuzzy feeling of having been helpful, but the way I'm going to get the feeling from now on is to inform the beggars that I've already given. To the government, which runs social service agencies to assist the needy, and to organizations such as the Salvation Army, which perform the same charity work. Directions to any and all agencies and churches are available in every phone book, or as near as the closest church. If they are blind, or illiterate, Id be happy to help them find the resources.
As I've always told my kids: the only way I am Godlike is in helping those who help themselves.

Judging by the results the fake panhandlers from the Pittsburg radio stations got, you can see why a peanut butter sandwich doesn't impress them, lol. But really-$2500 in one day?! Think I just decided what my Plan B will be, if expediting falls through! ;)

Ok Cheri keep off Liberty Ave that is mine, you can work Grant Street.
You know I used to work at a law firm in the city and rode the pat bus home every night and the same people that I would see with there little cans on the corners when I when to lunch every day would be taking the bus home and believe me they were not all homeless.

When other people see someone giving and the streets are busy, everyone starts dropping money in them cans.

I got the huge sctach off bit a couple days ago, i was like no i dont think so. I'm from the detroit area. I heard it all and seen it all, i dont follow anything.

The only time i did give money was i seen a panther driver pull up in a truck stop by and asked me for .50 to make a phone call. I know his story was legit cause he was at the orientation and they said his o/o didnt put any money on his card yet. ust wonder why he dont have a cell phone though.

>Ok Cheri keep off Liberty Ave that is mine, you can work
>Grant Street.

I have to ask, since I don't do things halfway, how's the weather on Grant Street? If I'm gonna stand there all day, every day, I want blue skies & sunshine, and an average daily temp of 70 - why should I be uncomfortable in rain, or cold, while allowing people to give me some of their money? :p
PS Who's the union for these guys?
