Opinions on fair tax ?

From what I've heard and read it seems to be a possible improvement (info at fairtax.org ). What I like best is it's a sales tax so drug dealers , pimps , and crooks that haven't paid tax on their income will pay when buying their fancy clothes , jewelry , cars , and homes . I'm no economic expert though so I'd like to know if anybody sees any flaws in the plan .

HI
I'd love to see it especially after Clinton told Larry king about how great of a tax break he got from new tax bill.Wouldn't it be great if everybody had to pay taxs not just the middle class and the self-employed.

Also known as a national sales tax, this concept has been attracting growing support over the years. Notables like Steve Forbes and an inceasing number of U.S. Senators and Congrespeople are voicing positive support for it. I believe we might see such a tax in our lifetime. My concern is it won't replace the income tax but add to it.

If the fair tax is implemented as clean and simple as its advocates seek, we're in for a better federal revenue system, I believe. But if it's not clean - and nothing is in politics - it may do more harm than good; unsatisfactory as the current system already is. Loopholes and exceptions and tax incentives to promote the public good can be written into the fair tax laws, just as they are written into current tax law now.

Whatever tax system comes into play, the ongoing tug of war between those that want to soak the rich and those that want to allocate funds to the rich will continue.

Trust me... if they put in a national sales tax, what makes you think they'll do away with income tax? It'll just be another way to get money out of us.

Could you just imagine if the Congress went back to the tax structure (not the rate of course) of pre 1943?

Maybe it is stupid to think that the complexity is really the problem not the rates?

Please no consuption/goods or national sales tax.

Actually what is fair about a tax?

I don't think corporations and or politicians would desire a even playing field that would include themselves.
For that reason, I not sure I will live to see a flat tax.
I am not sold on the fact that it would be a benefit anyways, when just looking at Steve Forbes plan, which was promoted heavily several years ago.
Just my opinion

When I was a child in Boston, the Sumner Tunnel was a $.25 toll road. The toll was implemented to pay for the tunnel construction and was to be eliminated when all the bills were paid. The bills have been paid and today the automobile toll is $3.00. The Boston politicians have been a bit careless with the truth.

A few years ago, the Canadian Govt. implemented a Goods and Services Tax (GST) to offset the government deficit. This costs all consumers in Canada an effective 15% sales tax. I wouldn't bet on the GST being repealed any time soon.

The implementation of the 'fair tax' would not hurt the wealthy but would be a tragedy for the common folk who would have to pay a disproportionate share of their meager income on every item purchased. Eventually our trusted politicians would find the need to restart a graduated income tax to fund the latest social programs. After all, the politicians standard of living needs to rise to exceed our incomes.

Fair tax is not a flat tax . The website gives (fairtax.org)comparisons . The Fair Tax book by Linder and Boortz is currently #2 on the nonfiction best seller list . I was curious about how expeditors with their many tax deductions like meal deductions , bonuses for buying a new vehicle , etc. would actually feel about getting rid of the IRS . You know your taxable income is way below your gross . I found one problem with this though . With the above named deductions as well as vehicle sales tax , additional equipment to the truck , etc. I showed a slight loss the first year on taxes . Great for geating a break from IRS but when I went to the bank for a loan they denied me claiming I hadn't shown a profit . Newbies have to keep this in mind . You may get money to start a business but once self employed lenders won't want to talk to you until you produce 2 years tax records and they look at your taxable net income , not your gross .

RUN !!!!! Run as fast as you can

I for one would like to see the day when Americans might actually learn something about the US Constitution and then pay attention more to where the tax money goes, how it is used to manipulate them (and others around the world), and the general criminality of government in this nation today (including the born again Neo-Con Neal Boortz).

Pointing fingers at drug dealers, pimps, etc. etc. is just a rouse to get you onboard with a shell game. The powers-to-be know people are fed up and are seeking solutions. But when you seek solutions from those that created and expanded the problem they now have you by your private parts. They will have you join them in their hunt for more and more money which translates to more and more power for them.

Are Americans acting like Americans when in this latest transportation bill there are billions in clearly unconstitutional pork? No. Instead they act like collectivist Soviet peasants waiting for the 'free' money (financed by the Chinese government) that will help the collectivists they elect get back into office.

Whatever tax system we have, both HIDDEN and obvious taxes, is really not relevant as long as we have two major parties that are hell bent on expanding a corporate version of the communist manifesto around the entire globe.

Instead of everyone working towards providing the government with more taxes, which equates to more power over the citizenry, we should be working together to achieve the exact opposite.

If, under the fair tax plan, "rebates" are to be given to the "poor" every single transaction you make will have to be traced in order for these rebates to occur. FAQ #3 on their web site (fairtax.org) states:
"How does the rebate work? All valid Social Security cardholders who are U.S. residents receive a monthly rebate equivalent to the FairTax paid on essential goods and services,..."

The words "Social Security cardholders" should send a chill down your spine.

With that in mind why do you suppose some grocery stores, entertainment parks etc. and others are now starting to use biometrics at the self check-out stands? Right now every financial transaction you make with financial institutions, even check cashing stores, is monitored. Everyone has a electronic financial profile. You deviate from the profile the feds come snooping. By supporting the "fairtax" plan you help extend that to every single purchase you make. Now factor that in with the desires of tryants, their total information awareness programs, and that terorists are, according to the FBI etc. etc., people who constantly talk about the Constitution, the Second amendment etc. etc. (Especially those with a CDL-A w/hazmat and SCUBA cert.)

This all looks pretty funny when I think back to the 60 Minutes episode years ago where we were told the East German communist government kept articles of clothing from individuals so their tracking dogs could pick up their scent faster. How old fashioned they were.

It appears I may have a lot of pie on my face. Went and looked at the legislation (HR 25). Couldn't find a direct link to the SS# at time of purchase. The SS# is needed though for anyone to receive a "rebate" from the feds based on Health and Human Services formulas.

I would watch this closely though. There are those in government that want to know every move you make, every dime you spend, and where you spend it. They would prefer a cashless society for that purpose.
