Sue? He wasn't even in the navy yet....
In fact he only gave the store 1 days notice...the recruiter was wrong to ask the lad to welch on his responsibility to his job that he had a commitment to....
You may have a point but a 3 day suspension seems to indicate a 1 day absence wasn't much of an inconvenience for the employer . Normally , employees will work together to help out good management . The difficulty getting employees to work extra to cover for someone is usually a result of having a manager employees don't respect .

Normally crazynuff I would agree with your sentiment about poor management. But today that may not be all of it or the actual problem. I have a niece who worked at a store and she was getting a lot of hours. My brother suggested to the manager to hire another body to allow my niece time off for herself and the manager explained that he was having trouble with the kids as they didn't care about work, would not work overtime (like my niece), would call in a hour before their shift to say not coming in etc. So since my niece was willing to work and work hard, he used her a lot. Yes she made her summers money for school but she had little social life.

Now you might think this was an isolated situation but my brother talked with other store owners in his town and some others nearby and found the same thing for all of them (he belongs to a couple of clubs so meets a lot of ppl). Basically it comes down to the youth of today does not have our work ethic and sense of responsibility (not all but most). So the store maybe reacting to what they are normally experiencing, problem youth, which of course can be misdirected against those who are not (close minded management).

Jack congrats on son making the grade and going for it.

FIS53, I agree with the problem of today's youth in employment . Look at the attitude of some young drivers coming out of tractor trailer school . But handing out senseless , overly harsh punishment doesn't exactly motivate them . Unless Jack's son had previous problems with the manager we are unaware of suspension without a warning is rather severe . It would be interesting to know if Walgreen's has a written policy regarding absenteeism .

ken you seem to forget that had he lied to the manager there would have been no problem. what is more important in life, lying to your employer or telling the truth? would you lie to e-1 about something that happens on a load or fess up to truth?

the reason he was hustled thru was the recruiting ofc is closing. the navy is full up. few openings since more members are electing to stay in the service since there are no jobs available in america. he was initially told he would not go to basic until march or sept next year.

now carl has called his former manager and asked what he would have done. he said a suspension was an option but he feels a verbal warning would have been better. since carl was suspended he has written a resignation immed letter and also written to walgrens corporate. this is the first time he has taken a stand strongly in his life. the navy has already changed him.

No Jack My problem is with the recruiter....NOT your son ot the store.....It was irresponsible of the recruiter to ask your son to come next day when he knew....he had a job...look at the date.....They just wanted him signed up before the end of month to get recruiting quotas....

That doesn't say much for TEAM work when the recruiter screwed over the store...and left them short handed.

Jack,
Congrats.

But I wouldn't even worry about Walgreen's, it is trivial in the bigger picture of his life. His obligation was finished when he got suspended and no one can blame him for his attempt to cover his obligation which was the most important thing he could do. Was he making it a career there, say as a Pharmacist or some other professional, I would then worry about it but seeing that he made a good and wise decision to go into the Navy, not to escape as many do but as a career, it is a blip in his life and should be as important as being asked "paper or plastic".
