Older Trucks

It was mentioned in another forum that older trucks are fine by some carriers, I was under the distinct impression that >5 years was pretty much taboo.

I challenged the person to give me a list of three carriers that are OK with older trucks, but all I've gotten was that he or she is OK with older trucks and therefore what the carriers want is moot.

So I thought I'd open it up to all: Are there carriers that are OK with trucks that are greater than 5-6 years old?

I'd certainly like to find one as the cost of trucks seems to drop significantly after age 5, so the lower truck price would certainly be beneficial to my bottom line the first few years I'm in the business!

Thanks.

Bugsy,

Most Carriers will accept a Class 8 truck up to 8-10 years old. If the truck has already been on with a carrier and has had a good service record most carriers will allow that truck to stay on until it becomes a problem child with out of service break downs or begains to look like a scrap pile.

As I recall there is a list of Carriers on the right side of EO Home page. I suggest you call a few and "get it from the horses mouth" insteada here, with someone guessing. You need to understand, however, a 5 plus year old truck, is not just a 5 plus year old truck, they differ vastly. I take them on a case by case basis. Your opportunity to use an older truck would be enhanced with a class 8.

I suspect you will find that on paper 5 years will be the standard but since real life and on paper are often different things you get some that take trucks on up to 8-9 years old as well as some that let one truck stay on after 5 years because it's in good shape while another is required to be replaced because it isn't.

FEDEXCC let my class 7 D unit stay on 10 years and was still in service when I took it out, but it put up good numbers, looked reasonably good and always passed inspections.

Thanks a million for the replies! I will take xcol advice and contact companies individually, but I'm kinda thinking FedEx to get my feet wet.

Considering what you folks are saying it will be nice to be able to get a slightly older truck with more creature comforts to enjoy!

Thanks again.

Bugsy in the case of FECC letting trucks go past the 5 year limit,I would think that you would have had to have the truck on with them before it reached that limit rather than try to put a 5+ year old truck on with them.As I stated in the other thread,I personally have seen many trucks in the fleet that were 5 years old and older but they need to know that it is a dependable unit.DD.

I actually asked a FDXCC recruiter this very question last week. He told me that they would have no problem with a 2001 FL Columbia since it is a Class 8 platform. I think they would probably cut it off at 5 years on a class 7 though. I'm sure that all this is subject to a in-house inspection though.
