how do you go about getting your own authority.i was thinking if you could do your booking of your loads yourself.and do say 3 or 4 companys in your home town.that you could charge a way higher rate like the companys charge say you do 2 or 3 loads a week.and always drop the load and head straight back home to were you know your loads will come from.im thinking this because i avg out around .90 a mile with my company.so i figure they charge around 1.80 to 2.00 a mile maybe more.so why not do two loads say 800 miles a week at lets go low at 1440 a week instead of the 720 i would make if i ran them for the company.i know the gas would be double on the 800 miles but you still have to take out the gas on the 720 so you would come out better ,plus you would be home more so you would save money in the long run.i dont know much about this,but they are a few companys i think would keep my busy,so any info would be good:confused:

Because of some business changes that may happen this year we have been considering getting our own authority and incorporating also.

I have talked to these people a few times and they came highly recommended and I felt comfortable with them:

Foley Carrier Services

I also heard good things about this group, but when i spoke with them, i wasn't overly impressd, but then that could just be me.

Permits Plus Inc: FMCSA/MC Authority, FHWA/ICC Authority, fuel taxes and truck permits

Beyond this info, you do realize that yea you might make more money, but you will wait longer to be paid and running under your own DOT number isn't a cake alk, there is alot more involved with rules and admin stuff...make sure you do ALOT of research before you pull the trigger.

First, you have to apply for your MC# and fed tax#. Then, your permits. I went thru OOIDA to get permits and tidy up all loose ends. A word of caution tho. Make sure they TOTALLY UNDERSTAND what kind of truck you are running, or they'll assume you have a semi rated at 80k.

Personally, I wouldn't go thru this when the economy is this bad. If you think you're going to strike gold, keep in mind customers often go shopping in times like these. That's where you're getting a lot of lowballing right now.

Not sure what size vehicle you are talking about or how you operate. I get dispatched from point A to point B to C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, C, K, L, M, D, N, O, P, Q, R, S, C, T etc. etc. Are you making 90cpm on all miles or loaded miles? Are you going home every time or truly an expediter and out for days/weeks at a time? If you are a true expediter your plan won't work. If you are a true expediter and convert to your plan and get $2 per mile instead of 90cpm then when you turn around and go home for the next one you've cut yourself to $1 a mile. As mentioned, there are many many hoops to jump through, more expenses, more hassles etc. in having your own authority. If you are not a true expediter (meaning point to point as shown above over many days/weeks and nothing else) and are delivering for 90cpm and going home immediately after already then it's worth investigating. If you are potentially only generating an extra 10-15% for all the hassles I wouldn't fool with it.

They are a very good company and have unlimited resources. But you better have a big mailbox, cause they will try to sell you everything they have. When I ran under my own authority, I used Foley to get me compliant. Every few days, I got a flyer trying to sell me something else that would help me make more money. Had I bought all of them, my wife would have had to get a job to help me pay for it. Ha! All I am saying is know what basic programs you need and don't fall for all the extra jibber they suggest.
