Oh, no, not again...

Went into the men's room at the Flying J in Amarillo to wash my hands and such before eating, and straight out of a scene from Seinfeld, this jerk comes out of a stall, and I hear the toilet flush. He passes me at the sink and walks out. I thought, "He'd better not be going to the buffet."

I get done and come out, and there's this filthy piece of trash at the salad bar, touching the utensils and the plates. I summoned the manager, and I told her what I had just personally witnessed. She was in a hard spot, having one customer who just witnessed this and is standing there, waiting for her to do something, and having another customer, even if he is the scum of the earth, that she wants to tell to go wash but really...can't.

So she had her staff change out the entire salad bar...the food, the utensils, everything.

Then, this subhuman finishes his salad and goes over to the main food bar and helps himself there. I flagged down a waitress, and they did the same to the entire food bar--well, the utensils, but not the food, even though I told them he only had the chicken and the beef.

Should it be a comfort that they did this, or should I just figure, "Well, it probably happens a dozen times a day without my knowledge, anyway; what's one more guy's germs?"

I'm in favor of repealing 90% of the laws in this country immediately. But I think I'd add one: anyone eating at a buffet must wash immediately before touching anything, in a sink visible to everyone. Or something like that. It'd be cheaper than having employees dishing up all the food.

Somebody has to much time on there hands. You should of just said something to the guy. How many other people do you think were in there eating that did the same exact thing with there hands or worse. If you can't get over this then i see you having a big problem living on the road, i have seen alot worse than someone not washing there hands then going to the buffet. Or you could just stop eating in any restaurant, that may solve your problem.

Bingo. It happens dozens of times. It happens so frequently that I, as someone who spent a lot of years in the foodservice industry and know the way things are done, am a little skeptical that a manager of a buffet restaurant would actually change out the entire salad bar just on the mere say-so of a patron. But hey, there are incompetent people in all sorts of jobs, so it could happen. But, rather than thinking, "He'd better not be going to the buffet," and then coming here and calling him a "filthy piece of trash," both should have been said out loud at the time to the guy, face-to-face. It's the proper thing to do, it's the right thing to do.

While I don't recommend calling someone a filthy piece of trash in that situation (because it assumes too much, not the least of which you know, for sure, what he was doing in that restroom stall and the manner in which he flushed the toilet), but I am a strong believer in never posting something online to or about someone that you wouldn't also say to their face. Honesty and integrity at all times is my deal.

Having said all that, knowing that it happens dozens of times a day, and that as a national restaurant chain the Flying J routinely receives minimally passing food safety inspections that are in the low 80's, why would anyone eat the buffet there? You take your life in your own hands when you eat at most buffets, especially at the J, and it's not even in your hands.

You have the option to NOT eat at the buffet and just order off the menu. Then, you will only need worry about those filthy people in the kitchen who just flushed and walked out.

Yes, this happens a lot. If you had approached him nicely, he might've even apologized and washed up. Who knows what he had on his mind at the time. Let the "thing" that is the real "thing", really be the "thing."
