Obama's tax cut plans

He hit one of the nails.
And missed several others.
First of all, it used to be common knowledge that it's asking for disaster for govt to raise taxes in a slow economy. Obama admitted this in 2009, and has implicitly admitted it again by agreeing to once again to continue lower tax rates. While we're at it, we ought to call this tax policy what it is - current income tax rates. They've been in place for almost 12 years, and have lowered the income tax rates for almost ALL Americans since they were inacted. Calling them the "Bush tax cuts" makes them sound temporary; besides, most of the public doesn't have a clue what they are or what they accomplished when enacted into law. I'll bet the average man/woman on the street will say that this tax legislation was only cuts for "the rich", and nothing could be farther from the truth. What needs to happen is for Obama and Congress to make the current tax policy permanent and stop talking about raising taxes on anyone; the "rich" already pay more than their "fair share". This would relieve a lot of the uncertainty that's holding back the private sector.

Secondly, how about considering the concept of forcing govt to get by with LESS of our money? Every time these irresponsible politicians get their financial a$$ in the proverbial sling we're supposed to give them more of our money to bail out their wasteful spending habits. Of course this starts at the local level with people holding their own elected representatives accountable, and most people don't even know who they are, much less how they vote on spending bills.

In reality about all we can hope for is that the American public will get politically involved at the basic level of politics - the presidential election this fall. They can vote for more of the same (Obama and the Dems) or vote for a move in a more conservative direction (Romney and the GOP). We can't expect to get back to fiscally responsible governance in one election year, but some real progress was made in 2010 and we can continue that momentum in Nov by voting against these liberals that would have this country become a larger version of Greece or Spain.

At the risk of sounding like "the sky is falling" it's not unrealistic to point out the signs that are everywhere within the country sending out warnings about excessive govt spending at all levels. Look at all the cities and towns across the US that are already in or heading towards bankruptcy - Scranton, PA being the latest. The US govt can fall into this financial quicksand just as easily, only on a larger scale if it continues the Obama spending binge. Consider the following article by Arthur Brooks (color emphasis mine):
In the Wall Street Journal piece “America is Already Europe,” Arthur Brooks writes that America is already a European-style social democracy -- from the percentage of GDP devoted to government, to the extent of regulatory burden on businesses:
  • Government spending: In 1938, total government spending in the U.S. was 15% of the GDP. By 2010, it was 36% (very close to Spain’s).

  • The U.S. debt: U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio is 103%; Spain – a country governed by a socialist workers party for most of the past 30 years – has a 68% debt-to-GDP ratio.

  • Most importantly, while a majority of Americans are neither leftists nor corporate cronies, they aren't paying much attention to the political system: According to Gallup, 81% of Americans are dissatisfied with the way the nation is being governed. Dissatisfaction has never been higher. Even so, only 25% of American adults can correctly name both of their U.S. senators, and 51% can name neither.

AEI president Arthur Brooks - America is already like Europe & why conservatives are happier than liberals - Society and Culture - AEI
The American public can reverse this trend in Nov, but they have to become active at the local level or at least on some online forums that might help them advance their cause for the conservative candidates. They may not al be perfect, but these gains must come incrementally when we do have a realistic chance to take the Senate and win back the Oval Office in the same year. Obamacare will be a disaster for our health care and the economy unless stopped this fall.
